The issue surrounding the difference in response between the Capitol insurrection and Black Lives Matter protests was about the show of force. President Biden noticed the difference.

On Jan. 6, several hundred supporters of President Trump charged inside the Capitol to overturn an election the president had repeatedly and falsely claimed was stolen. They were mostly White, and they roamed freely through the halls, taking selfies and stealing souvenirs, smashing doors and defacing statues, amid sporadic calls to “Hang Mike Pence!” Many shoved and beat officers, one of whom later died.

On June 1, 2020, a crowd of similar size gathered outside the White House to protest after the police killing of George Floyd. They were a diverse group who called for an end to police brutality and racial inequity, and an army of federal agents, assembled after Trump demanded a show of domination, sent them running with chemical agents and rubber bullets.

These two demonstrations, at the most prominent symbols of democracy in the nation’s capital, will define Trump’s legacy, highlighting the divisions he has stoked and the disparate treatment of Black and White people in America by law enforcement.

President-elect Joe Biden said that if the rioters had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesters, they would have been treated “very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol.”

“We all know that is true,” he said the next day. “And it is totally unacceptable.”

to those of you here (and there were at least 2 of you, I will never forget it) who on Jan. 6 were reacting to my news posting by supporting the idea that the rioters were being welcomed along the lines of "if they were black, they would have been shot immediately", here's your answe

I'm not a police officers but I have to think when you are outnumbered by that many that a gun would not help much. A lot of people would have died on both sides. As horrible as this event was, I think it would have been far worse had the cops started shooting.

THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE CROWD CONTROL AT PROTESTS, THIS IS WHY POLICE ARE "MEAN" TO PROTESTERS (of all varieties!), SO THAT IT DOESN'T TURN INTO A RIOTING MOB THAT EVEN GUNS CAN'T CONTROL.

You don't even let a large protesting crowd get too angry or too dense. Start there, you start corralling them right away. They don't obey a curfew, you start arresting, clubbing, ETC. Or you could end up with this. Those little flimsy barricades, what a joke. An angry group of protesters would start with that.

I note that some of the cops here are the later DC reinforcements in riot gear, and even they couldn't handle the already riled state of this mob and the proximity they had already breached. It should have never gotten this far, but Capitol police did not expect this, the grounds were not protected well for a breach by masses of people, just had up flimsy little barricades AND FURTHERMORE, more importantly, they are not trained in crowd control. The Capitol building actually does not entertain protesters of any type to begin with, individuals who try it are often ushered out.
