18 dead and 147 still missing after partial building collapse near Miami

At least 18 people have died and 147 remain unaccounted for following last week’s partial collapse of a residential building in Surfside, Florida, according to local officials and multiple news reports.

Here’s the latest:

- The search for survivors was halted early Thursday so engineers could inspect the stability of the remaining structure and resumed later that day, the Miami-Dade mayor said

- Officials said they are planning for “the likely demolition” of the South Tower, though no timeline has been given

- Officials also said they are prepared to manage multiple disasters ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa, which forecasters say could strengthen into a hurricane

- President Biden visited the site of the collapsed building on Thursday and said the federal government will cover “100 percent of the search and rescue costs for the first 30 days”
