Ethnic studies (ES) courses in K–12 schools are an increasingly common and prominent example of such culturally relevant and critically engaged practice. Proponents tout the benefits of ES for increasing student engagement and academic outcomes, yet there is little causal evidence supporting these claims. In this study, we use a preregistered regression-discontinuity research design to identify the longer-term impacts on educational attainment and engagement of being assigned to an ES course in grade 9. We find that assignment to ES substantially increased high school graduation, attendance, and the probability of enrolling in college.</p> </blockquote> <p><a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/118/37/e2026386118">https://www.pnas.org/content/118/37/e2026386118</a></p> </div></div></div> Sun, 28 Nov 2021 15:01:46 +0000 rmrd0000 comment 312194 at http://dagblog.com Facts on Native Americans in http://dagblog.com/comment/312180#comment-312180 <a id="comment-312180"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/reader-blogs/myth-thanksgiving-native-american-perspectives-pilgrims-34862">The Myth of Thanksgiving: Native American Perspectives on The Pilgrims </a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p> </p><div class="media_embed"> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" height="" width=""> <p dir="ltr" lang="en" xml:lang="en">Facts on Native Americans in the US:<br /><br /> The population nearly doubled since 2000<br /> Nearly 1 in 6 Native Americans identify as Cherokee<br /> Navajo Nation is the youngest tribal grouping<br /><br /> See more data. <a href="https://t.co/ToQZIvJD0V">https://t.co/ToQZIvJD0V</a></p> — USAFacts (@USAFacts) <a href="https://twitter.com/USAFacts/status/1460380871056232451?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 15, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async="" charset="utf-8" height="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" width=""></script></div> </div></div></div> Sat, 27 Nov 2021 23:38:22 +0000 artappraiser comment 312180 at http://dagblog.com Also see, from Smithsonian's http://dagblog.com/comment/312179#comment-312179 <a id="comment-312179"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/comment/312172#comment-312172">More on the abolitionist</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>Also see, from Smithsonian's National Museum of Afro-American History &amp;
