A nation-state can cultivate and maintain healthy levels of social trust and mutual respect - if it has a relatively stable national membership.

The Left's big dilemma:

The surest way to foster higher levels of social trust and mutual respect in a diverse democracy?

Have a more restrictive immigration regime, tightened asylum system, and implement robust civic-integration schemes which generate forms of national pride.

Social democracy and open borders simply do not mix. It is unworkable.

And this is where there is a serious blindspot in modern left-wing thinking in Britain:
