Buckley debating Gore Vidal or Noam Chomsky for all to see and draw their own conclusions. I liked earlier presidential debates before moderators decided to encourage food fights and horserace issues rather than policy & national import, but still, that Trump-Hillary debate is an unvarnished glimpse of real differences that can't be erased, Sarah Palin stands out as a lunkhead on prime time, etc. [yes, debates favor the most charismatic, which isn't good for thoughtful organized but more wallflower personality types, but that's also part of the general playing field]. Campus debates of course were typically rowdy if touching on anything useful, but still, there was an expectation that both sides would talk, basic principles would be espoused before the shoutdown began. Sully's a bit unrealistic in expecting a fair food fight (has he not seen the papers in 10 years; has he not seen Jon Stewart in 10 years?), but yes, it would be nice if moderators could hold off a slight bit with their smugness and editorializing while participants present. Too many electric 3rd rails of wokeness or conservatism that can't be dug into a bit - remembering how the difference between $12 and $15 became sacrosanct, if you didn't go for the higher you were evil (7 years later it's still at $7.25/hr - really important issue to obsess over). I'm amazed that the far left thinks state-sponsored indoctrination of kids on sexual preferences or anything is actually important - aside from preventing bullying, aren't there academic topics they should be learning to be able to do those $7.25 jobs? We can't even manage vaccines for schoolage kids anymore, a big step backwards. [I'm still wondering what math taught in K-8 we think is so important to the 90% who won't use more than basic logic and multiply/divide (and calculators that will do everything else), vs. understanding concepts & events of history, psychology, sociology, interpersonal/cultural communications, team building and project management, sales & marketing, physical well-being - i.e. exercise, basics of health & nutrition, simple biology and chemistry and physics, digital systems, design/aesthetics/art in society, and then argumentation/rhetoric/fake news vs. valid trains of thought, familiarity with valid references vs. unsupported assertions and random anecdotes... legal/civics/government including some basics of the Constitution and how citizens should participate, maybe some Wikipedia-like dashboards that everyone can go to keep a reality check on how fast things are changing in many ways, as well as gaps around the world so we have a bit of baseline.

Sun, 03 Apr 2022 07:03:05 +0000 PeraclesPlease comment 315871 at http://dagblog.com Sullivan's apparently a true http://dagblog.com/comment/315868#comment-315868
In reply to But what is "debate"?

Sullivan's apparently a true believer that it's a worthy thing (I seem to remember something about formal debate history, tho I might be confusing him with Hitchens)

@jonstewart Below are my reflections on our recent encounter.
