They’re steering clear of firm deadlines. Most importantly, they’re trying as hard as possible to just not talk about it at all.

“I would quite explicitly not comment on the conversations that are happening,” Brian Deese, Biden’s National Economic Council director, told reporters at a recent event hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. “I don’t think that has served anyone particularly well.”

The administration-wide gag order imposed over the last several weeks is a marked shift from earlier efforts to hype Biden’s expansive policy vision — and a tacit acknowledgment that the White House has learned its lesson.

The administration and its allies spent months last year trying to pressure Manchin into supporting a $1.7 trillion climate and social spending package, only to see the negotiations blow up in December.

Now Manchin is signaling he’s willing to deal again, and Democrats are all but begging him to write the legislation himself.

“This is really up to Joe,” one person familiar with the party dynamics said of senior Democrats’ attitude. “It’s basically going to be the Manchin reconciliation bill when all is said and done.” [.....]

You could have, as an alternate, delivered a more robustly Democratic Senate. BUT THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. So deal with the reality of this country.

Mon, 11 Apr 2022 22:22:54 +0000 artappraiser comment 316152 at http://dagblog.com “the slow pace of change has http://dagblog.com/comment/316104#comment-316104
In reply to Disagreement and Delay: How Infighting Over the Border Divided the White House

“the slow pace of change has left some of Mr. Biden’s longtime allies doubting his commitment and wondering whether he is more interested in keeping the highly charged issue from dominating his presidency.” Animated from deep within the administration https://t.co/drbsZPloV7
— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) April 9, 2022

Sat, 09 Apr 2022 23:47:59 +0000 artappraiser comment 316104 at http://dagblog.com ON Title 42: In a meeting http://dagblog.com/comment/316103#comment-316103
In reply to Disagreement and Delay: How Infighting Over the Border Divided the White House

ON Title 42: In a meeting last summer, officials from the CDC told Mr. Biden’s top aides that it was not clear there was still a public health rationale for keeping the border shut to most migrants, according to three people who attended or were briefed on the discussion.
— Zolan Kanno-Youngs (@KannoYoungs) April 9, 2022

The WH had always said it was entirely up to the CDC to decide how long to leave T42 in place.
