There are 2.5m Cuban Americans, an over-influential politico-demographic bloc, but they're much more likely to be able to keep the embargo going than invade Cuba. Oddly, the post-90's immigants are more right-leaning than the groups after the 60's wave. Part has been the steady "socialism, socialism, socialism" rants of the right, part can be there's just little other focus there?

It's so absurd that people supporting an embargo approach that hasn't changed Cuba's regime in 60+ years can talk about "naively believe" for any different strategy. But people just don't fucking think anymore - you can throw any old bullshit out there and as long as it lines up with your tribe, they gobble it up. I don't *know* if engagement will work, but with Fidel dead 10 years and Raul retired at 90 years old, it's possible something new and less obnoxious might shift things a bit. But acting like dicks is the GOP strategy of choice, so it's not even worth discussing reasonably.
Still, I don't think owning Cuba is anyone's end-game - it's more having a dog to kick around while we work out intra-US squabbles.

It was a priority for Trump throughout his entire term, despite his friendliness with Putin, etc.

Guys like Marco Rubio would certainly try to go there if they ever became president. He's nowhere near doing that, so of course, it hasn't happened.

Jesus, there were some assassination attempts and more whacko discussions that never got tried between 1960-1965, so nearly 60 years ago. Those material investments in Cuba went to Vegas & elsewhere - no one except some dying Miami Cubans thinking we have anything there. Gitmo is a convenience & prolly tied to security from Russian missiles, but really, no one's teaching kids in school about our lost colony or empire in Havana. We have Puerto Rico - how popular is that? Dominican Republic is easier than Cuba to control. But that kind of overt money laundering from Batista days is gone with the wind.

Nah, the US tried to assassinate Castro numerous times and defiantly maintains a prison there and had huge material investments there before Castro. If a nationalist were president, they would act aggressively toward Cuba.

I looked in to Dave Rubin's YouTube account and saw that he has all but been avoiding the topic of Russia and Ukraine. Before all this, he was boasting about how much more macho Russian military videos were than the woke ones over here.

More than likely, the whole Russian flirtation of the Trump era will simply go down like the 1930s America First era, when various American politicians and political movements flirted with Hitler and Mussolini. You'll have more GOP rhetoric like what you posted above, and liberal hawks will have a model for defiance in Zelensky.

It was largely Democrats who did the majority of heavy lifting during the Cold War era - the Korean and Vietnam wars. Dwight Eisenhower privately said something to the effect of "do we really need this?" when he was shown a test of the hydrogen bomb. A lot of Trump era Republicans have boasted of the fact their party ended the Vietnam war. Ronald Reagan presided over what at least seemed like the end of hostilities.
