Eight people shot, one dead in less than 12 hours in New Orleans says NOPD

In less than 12 hours, eight people were shot in New Orleans from Wednesday afternoon to early this morning as violent crime continues to rise out of control.

According to New Orleans police reports, one man was shot on the edge of the UNO campus just after 3:00 pm. at the intersection of Leon C. Simon and Wainwright Drive.

Another man was shot in a separate shooting in the 9th ward around 9:00 pm.

Two male victims were also shot in the 7th ward just before 11:00 pm, It happened at the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Pauger Street. Initial information shows two male gunshot wound victims arriving at a local hospital via private conveyance.

Another shooting in the 2300 block of Saint Anthony Street left one man dead. It happened just after midnight in the 7th ward. Upon arrival, officers located a male gunshot wound victim. The victim was transported via EMS to a local hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

Three more people were shot overnight in New Orleans East about 30 minutes later.

That shooting happened in the 8300 block of Chef Menteur Highway. Initial information from police shows when officers arrived they found three gunshot wound victims on the scene. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Watchdog group, the Metropolitan Crime Commission has been tracking the violent crime trend in New Orleans.

According to their data shooting incidents are 88% higher compared to 2019 but remain slightly lower to 2021, down about 5%. MCC data also says the city is continuing to see incidents with multiple victims, so the actual number of individuals wounded by gunfire in 2022 is likely far higher than the 196 incidents reported to date.
