Saw an animal shelter tweet, & got to thinking/googling: each year roughly 3 million cats & dogs are adopted, and 3 million are put to sleep, with 70 million strays on the street (cat adoption is a lot lower than for dogs). And animals are lot cheaper & easier to deal with than kids.
5 states make up half the kills - Texas, California, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. Expect a lot of sympathy from these for unwanted babies (Georgia & NC at 10m population each are really punching above their weight for euthanizing critters)
