I first saw it when I was 14. Later, during 4 years of college, it became my favorite place in Washington. There's something about that statue, its classical setting, the pose, the sense of this person of dignity, watching over the city, the nation. I think there is no finer monument anywhere.

Thu, 12 Feb 2009 23:16:08 +0000 TheraP comment 19224 at http://dagblog.com I think this every other year http://dagblog.com/comment/19223#comment-19223
In reply to A Bicentennial Minute

I think this every other year was Lincoln's had to do with the fact that we were still fighting the civil war fifty years ago. Places in the old south still felt Lincoln was a war criminal.

Now we prefer to refight Vietnam. Although lately we are taken back to the thirties while the revisionists throw excrement at FDR.

Except for a few confederate flags, the civil war is already over. Not racism and not negative action for minorities and affirmative action for the wealthy.

I take pride in the fact that Lincoln is so honored. Demonstrates some good in this country. And our New President is celebrating this great day by speaking. And as a speaker, Obama is one of the best we got.

Thu, 12 Feb 2009 22:17:57 +0000 dickday comment 19223 at http://dagblog.com I knew we would find http://dagblog.com/comment/19222#comment-19222
In reply to A Bicentennial Minute

I knew we would find something to agree on one day. Great blog.

To answer your question, I guess what stands out to me the most is the same thing you noted as being absent - a modern day understanding and appreciation of just what Lincoln meant to the history of our country. While it is troubling in general as an indictment of the educations system, is particularly damaging the republican party has lost Lincoln as a model for their efforts.

I think both parties, at the grassroots and in Washington, have much better historical examples to live up to.

Thu, 12 Feb 2009 21:09:45 +0000 Jason Everett Miller comment 19222 at http://dagblog.com Beautiful tribute to Lincoln. http://dagblog.com/comment/19221#comment-19221
In reply to A Bicentennial Minute

Beautiful tribute to Lincoln.
