Julian22: I don't disagree with the point you make about the history of the PRC. I am suggesting, however, that this is a particular moment in time when individual people are suffering. Can't we empathize with them now, when they need that show of empathy, and deal with government maslfeasance or corporate irresponsibilty at another time?

It's heartening that Chinese are feeling (and allowed to feel) solidarity with their fellow citizens in Sichuan. It's also encouraging that the government held a 3-day period of national mourning with the flag at half mast in Tiananmen Square -- the first time in the 59-year history of the PRC that the regime commemorated the suffering of ordinary citizens in this way. Would that the government in Beijing allowed their new-found humanity to include the many, many more citizens who lost their lives in past tragedies -- both natural and man-made -- with public accountability and apologies.
But this is a start.

All xenophobia and nationalism aside, this is just as stupid an idea as the "don't by gas on [random day]" email that gets morons in a tizzy. Don't by Chinese products? It may as well just say, "Don't by anything." These emails are geared toward dumbassess and only dumbassess will forward it thinking they're being "political" and Making a Statement.
