dagblog - Comments for "My Election Night" http://dagblog.com/politics/my-election-night-7383 Comments for "My Election Night" en Beautiful, Doc.  If I may http://dagblog.com/comment/91420#comment-91420 <a id="comment-91420"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/politics/my-election-night-7383">My Election Night</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>Beautiful, Doc.  If I may share a bit of my own voting experience from last night:  I vote in this small, old stone building right in the middle of Pelham.  The original Village Hall.  There's a new Town Hall right next door to it, where taxes and parking tickets are collected, where the police station resides, but the Village Hall is more charming.  There's a children's playground out back, and from the rear windows you can see the Pelham Village Clock Tower next to the train station. </p><p>The last two times I voted there, in 2008 and again in this year's primary, it was very quiet and I was in and out within minutes.  But last night, I noticed every parking space outside on Fifth Avenue was taken, and even the supermarket lot was almost full.  I took that as a good sign.  Sure enough, when I entered the building I was overwhelmed by the amount of people inside.  People just getting off work, like me, with their children in strollers, their husbands or wives standing next to them.  Elderly people of all races, young people looking lost and confused at all the tables set up in the room with district numbers taped to them.  I couldn't help but smile, even knowing that some of those voters were planning on voting for candidates I wouldn't vote for. </p><p>Democracy in action.  It's a beautiful thing.</p><p> </p></div></div></div> Wed, 03 Nov 2010 22:51:45 +0000 LisB comment 91420 at http://dagblog.com A lovely piece.  The key--and http://dagblog.com/comment/91399#comment-91399 <a id="comment-91399"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/politics/my-election-night-7383">My Election Night</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>A lovely piece.  The key--and I'll try and remember this--is in reaching beyond the vivid, painful realities of the day to find the soothing balm that gets us through to tomorrow.  Politics isn't everything, but you probably couldn't have convinced me of that yesterday, or even this morning.  Tonight I'm winding down and I can enjoy the seven deer at the compost pile eating Jack-o-lanterns.  They're chewing the grins right off those faces.</p><p> </p></div></div></div> Wed, 03 Nov 2010 21:40:22 +0000 Ramona comment 91399 at http://dagblog.com
