In fairness the parasite thing was a very, very small part of the program. Maybe it struck a chord because, like you, I have never been very comfortable with the current pet paradigm. Never had inside house pets. Had a couple of dogs and multiple cats growing up but they always lived outside and were expected to protect the property from pests. There was a mutual respect as well as fondness but we never mistook each other for the same species. Maybe that is why I still prefer working dogs to the toy ones and cats that are only friendly when they are hungry. :-/

Overall I guess I don't mind so much that some pets con their 'masters' into lifelong caretakers. It is kind of funny although the more I think about it the more disturbing it becomes. What really bothers me is when real children are treated like pets or accessories, most often by celebrities.

Wow, I've got to look for a rerun, that sort of explains why the whole pets thing has always bothered me a tad. Even though I had pets myself as a kid, there's always been this feeling like some really sick undercurrent hoveirng in the background, a relationship not quite right, something's wrong here....bad for both parties involved, etc.....

Did you watch NOVA last night? If so, then you know it is all dogs' fault. They've evolved from grey wolves into parasites who con another species into caring for them and raising their young. Sort of like cowbirds.

No, no, no...yer not seein' it right: These are the non-unionized collies who serve the Royal Pomeranians and Adopted Beagles and Mutts. The collies also perform the post-dinner 'tummy-rubs'. They have a Special Room for the dogs who come to the restaurant in Designer Handbags...
