Indeed. The story of the first feast of Thanksgiving may stand alone in the popular American mind as a time of tranquil respect between natives and newcomers. The view through that window is tiny, yet deeply compelling.

At our recent salmon return celebration a featured speaker told us about work he is doing with Alaskan tribes. He conveyed what he had learned from native people -- that the traditional annual gathering around this magnificent display of abundance is like "Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years all rolled into one."

Which makes the imminent tragedy of the proposed Pebble Mine all the more heart-wrenching.

"For a window of time, good neighboring overruled the takings of colonization." It wasn't a very long window of time, was it, Watt? Trails of Tears and Broken Treaties and the Rape of the Indian Trust Fund....sigh. Never mind.

The first sentence in the prayer should read "celebrate the return of salmon to our watersheds." I apologize for any other errors I missed.
