And he was a stickler about geography - to the degree that i can point out forieng countries on a map or name their capitals it's because of Dr. Stelmach.

Tue, 28 Jul 2009 19:00:50 +0000 Deadman comment 7540 at http://dagblog.com Unfortunately, no. Salinger and a course on satire. He treated his students like college students, with the benefits and the responsibilities that entails. We read all of Salinger's work, tracking and analyzing his development as a writer. We were required to turn in a paper every week, and two of them were chosen for the class to discuss and to grade. I produced schlock some weeks, but I also wrote the best paper I'd done in high school.

In the satire class, I discovered writers I'd never heard of, like H.L. Mencken and Ring Lardner. I read Twain beyond Huck Finn and Swift beyond Gulliver's Travels. I learned to hear the biting critique hidden in the folds of Garrison Keillor's radio shows and e. e. cummings' poems. Most importantly, I learned how to write satire, a muscle that I've only recently begun to exercise again. If I ever publish a satire book, I will dedicate it to the memory of Dr. Workman.

Tue, 28 Jul 2009 17:53:00 +0000 Michael Wolraich comment 7534 at http://dagblog.com i think being an http://dagblog.com/comment/7533#comment-7533
In reply to Probably my Masters thesis in

i think being an astrophysicist is very cool! do you use that in your day job?

Tue, 28 Jul 2009 17:39:48 +0000 Deadman comment 7533 at http://dagblog.com Wrote and directed a http://dagblog.com/comment/7530#comment-7530
In reply to 9) Enough about regrets for

Wrote and directed a play

(associated regret: didn't take the play to Edinburgh fringe festival)

Tue, 28 Jul 2009 17:27:50 +0000 Michael Wolraich comment 7530 at http://dagblog.com Strength: hidden http://dagblog.com/comment/7528#comment-7528
In reply to 7) What is (or was, if you

Strength: hidden depths

Weakness: depths are too well hidden

Tue, 28 Jul 2009 17:22:45 +0000 Michael Wolraich comment 7528 at http://dagblog.com
