The simple fact is, France pays less for healthcare per citizen than we do, and they have a longer average life expectancy. That they could do better with their accounting is mostly an orthogonal issue.

Fri, 28 Jan 2011 18:19:41 +0000 Verified Atheist comment 104487 at http://dagblog.com "....Germany and France http://dagblog.com/comment/104486#comment-104486
In reply to Defending Health Care Reform – Again!

"....Germany and France manage to provide high quality health care to all their citizens while spending only two-thirds as much of their GDP on health care as we do, and while remaining highly successful capitalist economies."

You reference France and it's health care system but neglect the fact that it ran an estimated $20 billion deficit in 2010 to cover the Assurance Maladie. That's significant considering it's a country with a population 5 times smaller than the U.S. and with a 15% higher income tax level (on top of already high sales tax).Germany hammers it's citizens with taxes. While individuals like yourself herald France's system, the French are actually looking to the U.S. for solutions to it's ballooning healthcare debt and adopting many of our methods, such as co-pays.

France's inability to cover it's healthcare cost isn't recent. It's been ongoing since the late 80s. They're now starting to feel the crush of this mounting debt and they're closing hospitals, clinics and other treatment facilities.

Fri, 28 Jan 2011 18:15:49 +0000 Zack comment 104486 at http://dagblog.com
