Back to the Moon and beyond. Not only did we put our mental talents to the test, we created markets for serving the space race needs which filtered down to the public. If I'm not mistaken, velco was a major achievement in the race to the moon. And after the cold war ended, tons of exotic metals flooded the market in the form of consumer products. And I have to mention Tang too. I remember as a kid we really preferred Tang instead of a soda.</p><p>It's not so much the major objective, it's the supporting functions necessary to bring a project, like a moon base or trip to Mars, to fruition where ordinary people find employment. Think of it like your personal PC processing away on a data file from SETI, cancer research, or gnome project, while you're not using it. Since a computer is only capable of handling a single request at a time, distributing the workload across the entire planet is like a computer with an unlimited amount of time to service a request in minimal time...the more PC's involved the faster a solution can be rendered.</p><p>But the real trick is not to have a one dog show, like our moon landing turned out to be...we should have a thriving colony up there if we were serious back then. If the US were to actively prepare for a return to the moon with colonization it's ultimate goal there wouldn't be any unemployment in the US...there'd be more work just getting things prepared to last a good 5 years before the first launch.</p><p>Unfortunately, it'll take taxes to accomplish the endeavor. Taxes which will be paid out of the jobs the project creates, but nonetheless taxes which GOPer's will fight tooth-n-nail to extinguish.</p></div></div></div> Mon, 24 Jan 2011 20:24:22 +0000 Beetlejuice comment 103944 at http://dagblog.com The problem being that if the http://dagblog.com/comment/103940#comment-103940 <a id="comment-103940"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/reader-blogs/money-or-sane-society-8689">Money ? or a Sane Society</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>The problem being that if the current system/culture is left to it's own devices, it will surely degenerate to a culture of corruption, thievery and debasement that would make organized crime of Chicago of the 1920s look like a church bake sale.</p></div></div></div> Mon, 24 Jan 2011 20:12:29 +0000 cmaukonen comment 103940 at http://dagblog.com Reaganomics was worst thing http://dagblog.com/comment/103880#comment-103880 <a id="comment-103880"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/reader-blogs/money-or-sane-society-8689">Money ? or a Sane Society</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>Reaganomics was worst thing for America. </p> <p>Profits over justice</p> <p>Profits over people</p></div></div></div> Mon, 24 Jan 2011 06:37:14 +0000 Resistance comment 103880 at http://dagblog.com It's a lie.  "They call it http://dagblog.com/comment/103879#comment-103879 <a id="comment-103879"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/comment/103877#comment-103877">But ... isn&#039;t the dream of</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>It's a lie.  "They call it the American Dream becaue you have to be aleep to believe it."</p></div></div></div> Mon, 24 Jan 2011 05:11:04 +0000 cmaukonen comment 103879 at http://dagblog.com People don't just want the http://dagblog.com/comment/103878#comment-103878 <a id="comment-103878"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/comment/103877#comment-103877">But ... isn&#039;t the dream of</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>People don't just want the money.  They want the "freedom" and leisure money can buy.   What they really want what is known as  "f.... you money"  Of course, that is an illusion.   If everyone had "f... you money", who would there be to hire or buy from?</p></div></div></div> Mon, 24 Jan 2011 04:52:00 +0000 EmmaZahn comment 103878 at http://dagblog.com But ... isn't the dream of http://dagblog.com/comment/103877#comment-103877 <a id="comment-103877"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/reader-blogs/money-or-sane-society-8689">Money ? or a Sane Society</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>But ... isn't the dream of the accumulation of enormous sacks of money what gives the masses their incentive to keep their noses to the grindstone and work, work, work, because in America, anyone who works hard will be rewarded with enormous sacks of money?  Please don't tell me that's a lie.  I mean, it's the only dream I have left after the Jets loss tonight ... that and winning the mega-millions lottery, of course.  Then my life will be just perfect.
