And I thought of you right away while reading it, especially your comment the other day about using the term "reactionary".

It really hit home for me, a lot of things that frustrate about people not letting go of old paradigms that just don't make sense. (Even my occasional rants about blogosphere--it's like so many are just repeating what was said/done on 80's talk radio.) It's 2011 dammit, will someone eventually break away from this same ol same ol crap, I'm not going to live forever.

But seriously, the following is a great observation:

The great ideological struggles of the twentieth century were between secular political religions that all claimed the sanction of science and glorified technology. While liberals and Marxists claimed the heritage of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment that produced the American and French revolutions, Mussolini and Hitler denounced Enlightenment ideals, but did not reject science. Nazi racism, like Soviet communism, was justified by appeals to pseudoscience. Totalitarianism is best understood as a perverted version of modernity.
