Your points are interesting. I'm not sure I agree that this is something to build on, but then I guess we will see. As one on the left who is angry about this result, I can tell you that my anger would not be so strong, if Obama hadn't promised to fight for things that he did not fight for and gave away before negotiations began. [fixed - d] So in the end we will never know if we could have gotten single payer or something more progressive than mandatory payments to large corporations which is what this act provides.

More people need to wake up to the true significance of the Affordable Health Care Act, even if it's only a beginning, and to Nancy Pelosi's pivotal role in the measure's successful passage. A civilized country needs a minimum of three things: a military that preserves its independence, a legal system that protects the citizens and a health system that keeps them alive and well. Astonishingly, we've never had the third.

The criterion for Obamacare is not whether it provides it now. .It doesn't. It's whether it moves us far enough so that, God willing and the creek don't rise, we can be pretty sure we'll finally get there. Which it does.

It was a great job by Pelosi and Reid for getting something passed . And by Obama for not raising the bar too high: settling for a good enough result which could be achieved as opposed to a better one that couldn't Those hours of tedious debate and tawdry compromises convinced me at least that that's a fair and balanced description of what they did..

Mission accomplished.

For now.

It'll take another crusade to go the rest of the way. Which absolutely doesn't mean Obamacare was a failure. A failure would have been no bill, or so limited a one it provided no reason to be confident that we'd ever be able to go all the way. Obamacare's much better than that. Sure it wasn't a touchdown but a field goal's nothing to be ashamed of..

Thanks Dick. But since all the European Nations began with Universal Heath Insurance, and then we have a few years to go before we get anything like the pubic option people envision. Great Britain moved towards the NHS after already establishing national health insurance. The NHS was created in 1948, so it took them 37 years to get their pubic option. So hopefully we will get it in less than 37 years!!!!!

Mac, it's great to hear from someone who has been involved with this for so long. I'll go back and read the PDFs soon, but I just wanted to thank you for this. It has been a long, uphill climb toward Public Option and we're not at the top yet, but when you point out how far we've come, and what a struggle it was, I have hope that it wll still happen in my lifetime.

Thanks for attempting to put this issue in some perspective. I'm looking forward to reading more.

You know I take essays this yours and add Ducky's numerous blogs with provisions of so many bills, and I actually know something about the subject.
