Why do you think the Brits choppered in spies, excuse me, diplomats protected by commandos in the first days of the "rebellion," rather than to wait and see which way the cookie would crumble?

Might it just have been that they wanted undertakings about present and future oil and Sovereign Wealth Fund deals before the "world community" decided who the "reformers" and "moderates" were.

At present prices, Libyan oil production is about $185 million a day. Amortising the development costs of weapons that are mostly exported at $100 million a day for a month is a bargain if it gets you hooked up with $200 million a day for the next 3 decades.

Spain's empire would probably be a better comparison to America's than Britain's. But, still, ending the arms trade and closing the tax-havens would be cheaper than what we are doing now.

I don't know if you've seen "Inside Job", the conclusion that I draw from it is that the real problem for world peace is that the America's elites are hopelessly corrupt and rotton and when that happens, depending on the size and power of the country, terrible things proceed from that.

Our own ground to air missiles strike down our own planes, for decades.

Unfortunately if you're going to do a deep analysis of imperialism historically and apply it to the current situation, you're going to have to be a little more sophisticated. To apply the fall of the British Empire to economic issues shows a severe lack of understanding of the role of the spread of nationalism from those returning from European education, to name one factor. Or you may know about that factor and choose to ignore it for purely ideological reasons.

But then you point to how the British influenced the lessening of the slave trade through though their imperial power. The same imperial power that drained the coffers. So are you arguing against imperial powers or only those that don't act in the name of the common good. Given the latter, should the US seek to be the benevolent imperial power? Or is being imperial inherently bad (which would of course be undermined by the British actions to lessen the slave trade)?
