I love PZ Meyers. Something in this stood out to me. From a quote in the article, apparently from the diocese in question:

"We don't know 100% what Mr. Cooks motivation was," said Susan Fani a spokesperson with the local Catholic diocese. "However, if anything were to qualify as a hate crime, to us this seems like this might be it."

This is exactly what concerns me about the notion of hate crimes. We're seeing this kind of creep to label religious blasphemy as a hate crime in the UK, Europe and even now in the UN (and the Obama administration appears to be getting on board with this). We should prosecute people for crimes, not emotions.
