Vista is the real turkey. I work in both Snow Leopard and W-7 and for most things they are indistinguishable. Putting Ubantu in the Toshiba is a great idea. I have one in the closet with Vista in it and that might give it some added useful life.

Now that Windows 7 runs nicely, the real reason to use a PC over Mac or Ubantu is that there is so much more written for it.

To give you an example I bought my wife a Brother multifunction Din A-3 printer scanner at a fantastic price that was supposed to be compatible with Mac, but it didn't allow her to scan directly from Photoshop... also the printing went slowly. I called their customer service, but it turned out they didn't give any support to Mac... I plugged it in to my PC with W-7, which immediately recognized it, had all the drivers, and it ran like a house on fire and everything worked great and I could scan from PS... Bottom line: I have to do all my wife's scanning.

So that is really what it is about... most of the good software that people write, just like the viruses, they write for Windows and as I say they finally have a decent system running, with millions of drivers already loaded and tons of interesting freeware to boot.

Last year, I got my wife a new ASUS netbook with W7 starter. I took her slow Toshiba notebook and replaced Vista with Ubuntu. Now Ubuntu runs like a champ and she complains about her slow netbook. Once I figure out how to boot the netbook to a thumb drive, W7 is history.

More Mac criticism: We bought our Mac Pro and it came defective from the factory and to top it off, the official Mac workshop in Madrid installed Airport without even testing it properly and charged about twice as much as a normal place would have. And they absolutely refused to admit any error on their part. Fortunately we had bought it at Spain's most mighty retailer, El Corte Inglés, and they put their cojones on the table and made Apple eat it and replace the hard disc... If not, we would have been out a lot of money.

So, I would say that Mac is like the girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead... when they are good, they are very, very good, and when they are bad they are horrid.

Try Windows7 you won't believe it is Microsoft. My wife has an IMac and a Mac Pro, both with Snow Leopard, I often use the Mac Pro. Because of the variety of programs, most of my professional work is with Windows. I had to struggle with Windows Vista for a couple of years and it was the biggest piece of shit I have ever seen. That is why W7 was such a surprise.

I ride a Kawasaki Versys, think Vespas are kinda cool, and wouldn't ride a Harley unless I was in drag in a Halloween parade, have a BS, double major, have worked in Pharma, Nuclear, and taught at an art college, I dress myself at REI and Wal-Mart, own a tux, but haven't worn it in 15 years, (might not fit into it actully if I tried), I'm 58 years old, consider myself liberal, live in a town of 80k people in Mexico, love tuna, prefer red to white, but would really rather have a cerveza, eat hummus occasionally, and prefer Orangina to anything Pelligrino, I'm good at math, and almost never throw parties, consider myself retiring, yet creative, occasionally elitist, rarely pretentious, I'm not "computer savvy", unless you compare me to my girlfriend.
