I work in both Snow Leopard and W-7 and for most things they are indistinguishable. Putting Ubantu in the Toshiba is a great idea. I have one in the closet with Vista in it and that might give it some added useful life.

Now that Windows 7 runs nicely, the real reason to use a PC over Mac or Ubantu is that there is so much more written for it.

To give you an example I bought my wife a Brother multifunction Din A-3 printer scanner at a fantastic price that was supposed to be compatible with Mac, but it didn't allow her to scan directly from Photoshop... also the printing went slowly. I called their customer service, but it turned out they didn't give any support to Mac... I plugged it in to my PC with W-7, which immediately recognized it, had all the drivers, and it ran like a house on fire and everything worked great and I could scan from PS... Bottom line: I have to do all my wife's scanning.

So that is really what it is about... most of the good software that people write, just like the viruses, they write for Windows and as I say they finally have a decent system running, with millions of drivers already loaded and tons of interesting freeware to boot.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 14:02:26 +0000 David Seaton comment 116661 at http://dagblog.com Last year, I got my wife a http://dagblog.com/comment/116660#comment-116660
In reply to Try Windows7 you won't

Last year, I got my wife a new ASUS netbook with W7 starter. I took her slow Toshiba notebook and replaced Vista with Ubuntu. Now Ubuntu runs like a champ and she complains about her slow netbook. Once I figure out how to boot the netbook to a thumb drive, W7 is history.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 13:30:57 +0000 Donal comment 116660 at http://dagblog.com More Mac criticism: We bought http://dagblog.com/comment/116657#comment-116657
In reply to Mac vs. PC: The stereotypes may be true

More Mac criticism: We bought our Mac Pro and it came defective from the factory and to top it off, the official Mac workshop in Madrid installed Airport without even testing it properly and charged about twice as much as a normal place would have. And they absolutely refused to admit any error on their part. Fortunately we had bought it at Spain's most mighty retailer, El Corte Inglés, and they put their cojones on the table and made Apple eat it and replace the hard disc... If not, we would have been out a lot of money.

And now, I read this: http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/137432/20110423/apple-we-must-have-compr...

So, I would say that Mac is like the girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead... when they are good, they are very, very good, and when they are bad they are horrid.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 12:21:04 +0000 David Seaton comment 116657 at http://dagblog.com Try Windows7 you won't http://dagblog.com/comment/116655#comment-116655
In reply to I have two Mac Minis. My wife has an IMac and a Mac Pro, both with Snow Leopard, I often use the Mac Pro. Because of the variety of programs, most of my professional work is with Windows. I had to struggle with Windows Vista for a couple of years and it was the biggest piece of shit I have ever seen. That is why W7 was such a surprise.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 06:30:37 +0000 David Seaton comment 116655 at http://dagblog.com I used to be America's http://dagblog.com/comment/116651#comment-116651
In reply to You are America's sweetheart.

I used to be America's sweetheart.

But then she threw me over for some asshole with a Kowie.

WTF, America?

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 03:54:39 +0000 quinn esq comment 116651 at http://dagblog.com You're just saying that http://dagblog.com/comment/116648#comment-116648
In reply to You are America's sweetheart.

You're just saying that because you can't get the image of me in drag on a Harley out of your mind.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 02:44:58 +0000 miguelitoh2o comment 116648 at http://dagblog.com You are America's sweetheart. http://dagblog.com/comment/116646#comment-116646
In reply to I ride a Kawasaki Versys,

You are America's sweetheart.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 02:23:42 +0000 Rootman comment 116646 at http://dagblog.com I ride a Kawasaki Versys, http://dagblog.com/comment/116639#comment-116639
In reply to Mac vs. PC: The stereotypes may be true

I ride a Kawasaki Versys, think Vespas are kinda cool, and wouldn't ride a Harley unless I was in drag in a Halloween parade, have a BS, double major, have worked in Pharma, Nuclear, and taught at an art college, I dress myself at REI and Wal-Mart, own a tux, but haven't worn it in 15 years, (might not fit into it actully if I tried), I'm 58 years old, consider myself liberal, live in a town of 80k people in Mexico, love tuna, prefer red to white, but would really rather have a cerveza, eat hummus occasionally, and prefer Orangina to anything Pelligrino, I'm good at math, and almost never throw parties, consider myself retiring, yet creative, occasionally elitist, rarely pretentious, I'm not "computer savvy", unless you compare me to my girlfriend. Who am I, and why won't these voices in my head leave me alone?

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 01:41:16 +0000 miguelitoh2o comment 116639 at http://dagblog.com I have two Mac Minis.
