Though I

Really. I once hired on to a framing crew to learn a bit about the process. I intended to build my own house, which I eventually did, but at that time I had not built so much as a birdhouse. It turned out that my job was being the mule. I would, for instance, carry all the sill plates and studs and lay them out while the rest of the crew nailed a wall together and stood it up. It was hot work in the Texas sun staying ahead of them. Next they would be high and I would be passing up the ceiling joists, etc.
During the day as we rode to one sight from another the foreman would often point to a house and say, "I built that house". Before too long I was able to point out the window and say, "I carried that house, that big one over there on the deep lot, I carried that one about thirty yards".
Funny how guys doing framing often takes credit for the "building". I met a sail-maker in St. Croix who had been a steel worker. He told me that he had built the Chrysler Building.
And Star, being blue collar all my working life I have seen women break into different fields traditionally dominated, almost or completely, by men. In my own experience, most of them got a fair shake and most did okay to excellent. I'm glad you had a good boss for that early experience. I know you do good work.

Wed, 27 Apr 2011 20:34:23 +0000 A Guy Called LULU comment 116981 at http://dagblog.com Great piece, Dusty.
