While NBC's Holt asks if Harris will visit the border, Harris notes that there will be no quick solutions

After sidestepping questions in a new interview released on Tuesday about why she had not made an official border visit, Harris faced persistent questioning from the news media in Mexico City. The vice president told journalists in an exchange on Tuesday afternoon that people couldn’t say they cared about the border without “caring about the root causes.”

“Listen, I’ve been to the border before. I will go again,” she told reporters. “But when I’m in Guatemala dealing with root causes, I think we should have a conversation about what’s going on in Guatemala.”

Harris maintained this line of response on Tuesday night during her remarks in Mexico City’s Sofitel Hotel, where she repeatedly said the purpose of the trip was to “address the root causes” of the flood of migrants at the southern border. When Harris was asked whether she would commit to a trip to visit the border, she repeated that she’d been to the border many times and that she would go again.

“I think it is short-sighted for any of us who are in the business of problem solving to suggest that we are only going to respond to the reaction as opposed to addressing the cause,” Harris said. “And that’s just a fact if we want to — we all know that in our lives, in our personal lives, if you want a deal with the effects of a problem, then you have to go to the core of what is causing it.”

Harris also said that when President Joe Biden addressed her about tackling the issue, it was about addressing the root causes — problems the vice president said would not be solved in a two-day trip.
