America’s history as a lesson in hope, cable news politics as a threat to the country, an alienated kid with a funny name whose unlikely rise proves change is possible.
Pete Buttigieg’s announcement speech sounded familiar, if only I could place it...
"Faced with an archaic and ineffective economic development apparatus, a global university (Notre Dame) that did little locally, and dim economic prospects, Buttigieg convinced the city to look forward, not backward." https://t.co/EwvEitVvGy
In huge Dem field, Buttigieg draws a unique contrast with Trump. No attempt at razzle dazzle. No putdowns. He excited his crowd with plainspokenness, clarity and intellectual rigor. On each issue he drew a contrast with Trump without fiery attacks or even invoking his name.
"My name is Pete Buttigieg, they call me 'Mayor Pete.' I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana and I'm running for President of the United States."

1/n (For the record, my view on 2020 Dems is: let ‘em all run™.) That said, Mayor Pete announcement speech was effective, in these technical ways:
- Had a three-part platform that is actually possible to remember (Security, Freedom, Democracy), and that he actually fleshed out.
What @yashar said: "If I saw this as a kid, it would have rocked my world." Me too - and would have preempted years of isolation and anxiety. https://t.co/nMqhRQwmze
Today, 2020 Dem Pete Buttigieg is making a special announcement in South Bend, IN.
Buttigieg’s defense of the costly Green New Deal & calls to abolish the Electoral College show that he's just another out-of-touch Dem embracing far-left policies.
I’m not gonna lie, it felt good when @PeteButtigieg thanked the current and former mayors who are here. Also felt good to have so many mayors onstage making the pitch for Pete *and* the power of local government. #PeteForAmerica
Wait, are endorsements a thing again? I thiught they were a sign of being part of a corrupt elitist establishment and being out of touch with the common people.
Strikes me that his mystique may be in the grownup-ness, the positivity, the confidence without arrogance, instead of whining about the other and attacks on the other, not a victim nor an attacker:
[...] Two protesters interrupted Buttigieg, who is openly gay, during a speech in Fort Dodge, Iowa, shouting about the two cities that the Bible says were destroyed by what it calls sinful acts, including sodomy. They were both quickly shouted down by a crowd of 1,650 chanting the South Bend, Ind. mayor’s name and escorted out of the area by security.
“You know the good news is, the condition of my soul is in the hands of God, but the Iowa caucuses are up to you,” Buttigieg said after the first protester was ushered away from the crowd.
“Remember the beauty of our democracy. Everyone here gets the exact same voice and vote. Feels like the numbers are on our side,” he added after the second protester was removed. [....]

[....] Demonstrators said they were not opposed to Buttigieg as a candidate, with some actually voicing general approval of his candidacy. But they hoped to nudge him on his foreign policy, particularly as it relates to Israel and its neighbors in the Middle East. While progressive Democrats in Congress have grown more vocally critical of Israel, with two members supporting the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against the nation, Buttigieg has a record of speaking positively about Israel. He has also criticized the lack of unity among Palestinians.
“Seeing the way that a country can be on the one hand very intentional, very serious and very effective when it comes to security and on the other hand not allowing concerns about security to dominate your consciousness,” he said last May after a visit to Israel. “I think that’s a very important lesson that hopefully Americans can look to when we think about how to navigate a world that unfortunately has become smaller and more dangerous for all of us.”
Buttigieg also suggested that the group Hamas, which the U.S. government officially designates as a terrorist organization although it administers Gaza, was to blame for much of the Palestinians’ problems.
“There really is not a unified or single voice for the Palestinian people,” he said. “Most people aren’t aware of the difference between what’s happening in Gaza—run by Hamas in a way that is contributing to a lot of misery there—but also totally different than an environment where you’d have a negotiating partner across the table.”
At the same time, Buttigieg has criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing policies. When Netanyahu announced ahead of his close re-election this month that he would begin annexing the West Bank if he won a fifth term—which he did—Buttigieg slammed the position [.....]
Nate Silver sez spike in voter interest in Mayor Pete came two weeks before the spike in media interest:
Gonna have a little vignette on this tomorrow but the spike in media interest in Buttigieg, while now in full bloom, lagged the spike in voter interest by about two weeks. https://t.co/30SqwYjsf9
[....] The Obama diplomats — Timothy Broas (Netherlands), John Phillips (Italy), Tod Sedgwick (Slovakia), David Jacobson (Canada) and Bill Eacho (Austria) — raised millions of dollars for the Obama-Biden ticket in 2008 and 2012. The ambassadors are now planning a fundraiser for Buttigieg in Washington, D.C., in May.
“I am all in with Mayor Pete. No one else. I don’t see anyone else who comes close,” said Eacho. “His ability to come across as authentic, honest, and trustworthy; his ability to connect emotionally with the American people, are qualities I have not seen in the other candidates. And of course I like the way he frames important issues. He is all about making progress without a flame-thrower approach.”
There is building buzz in Obama World around Buttigieg, a military veteran, Rhodes scholar and gay millennial leader [....]
