This is going to backfire hard on Russia. Sanctions may actually cause the Russian Federation to fracture/collapse, and the European Union will absorb multiple Eastern European states in to its orbit, while also creating new relationships with states with Russian sympathies and ties.
But here is a clincher and I do not mean this to sound conspiratorial - the treasury got looted hard when the Soviet Union collapsed and Putin is up there in years, having been president for 23 years. There might actually be an incentive somewhere around there to bring the whole thing down.

He's a grownup non-ideological Senator who does his homework about policy and cares about his state and the country. We need more like him and fewer like the ideologues and egotists and extremists who bash him and blame him incorrectly for stuff they don't understand.
edit to add what he has on his Twitter home page, my underlining: U.S. Senator for #WV. Chairman of @EnergyDems. Please do not hesitate to contact me to share your commonsense ideas, concerns or if you need assistance.

way interesting that this 2017 news thread started by Peracles has turned up on "Hits of the Day" menu (possibly because someone has cited it somewhere else on the internet? I've always suspected that is how that menu works) Note the other stories, links, and discussion on the thread...
