When a person is murdered at your local playground in the early evening, you stop letting your children play there. This is a perfectly natural reaction as a parent, it is how a community cedes its public spaces to crime, and is what separates resilient places from beset ones.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Authorities have arrested a second suspect following a deadly mass shooting at an Iowa nightclub earlier this month.
According to KCRG and KIMT, the Cedar Rapids Police Department announced Monday that U.S. Marshals arrested Dimione Jamal Walker, 29, on first-degree murder and weapons charges in connection with the incident, which occurred April 10 at the Taboo Night Club in Cedar Rapids. Two people died and 10 others were injured in the shooting, the news outlets reported.

He remains at Chicago Police District 5 for processing, Cedar Rapids police said Monday afternoon.
I really wonder how long before we see the conspiracy theory that BLM is really a false cover organization for racists to get Blacks to buy guns and kill and maim a lot of Black youth? So, you know, there will be fewer of them coming up to register to vote?
To be honest, I really can't see Lindsey Graham getting all that upset if a lot of Black constituents in SC continue to kill and maim one another.
And what happened to all those angry white male mass shooters, where did they go?
It's interesting to note that this is a very ANTI-fringe point. Sure, there was a higher OG Black crime rate, and many "edgy" takes on racism and genetics as a result.
But, (X) just almost doubled...in a few years...due to changes in obvious policies mainstream leaders control.
The spin on marketing over the past few years has been that these disorders are underdiagnosed in women and people of color generally, thus making getting diagnosed with a mental disorder or learning disability almost sound like a privilege that only white people previously enjoyed.
re: antidepressants - whatever might be the correlation, it would be tiny compared to this elephant in the fucking room and therefore doesn't mean much:
Douglas A. McIntyre, 24/7 Wall Street, FEB. 10, 2021
U.S. gun sales in January surged 60% to 4,137,480. This makes it the largest single month since figures started to be recorded in 1998.
The rise is part of a trend. Gun sales in the United States rose 40% last year to 39,695,315. The figure also represents the high-water mark in gun sales since the current record-keeping system went into effect. Increases by state in January varied substantially, as has been the case for years.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation tracks gun sales and publishes a list of how many are handled as part of its National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Each month, the figures are reported by state. Nearly everyone put through this system qualifies as a buyer. People who are excluded usually have criminal records. Of the more than 310 million checks that have been done since 1998, there have only been 1.5 million denials. Therefore, the data is the best proxy for U.S. gun sales available.
Growing civil unrest may have prompted people to buy guns for personal and family protection, many social scientists have posited, although this remains a matter of debate. Another theory is that chaos brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a major cause. A new UC Davis School of Medicine study about fear of violence reports: "The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated persistent structural, economic, and social inequities in the conditions that contribute to violence and its consequences."
Who bought these guns? CBS News pointed out that over 5 million people were first-time gun buyers last year. CNN reported a sharp rise in sales to Black Americans and women. "Sales to women are also up 40% through September when compared with the same period last year," the news network pointed out.
The January increase should not be taken as unusual, nor should the rise in gun sales from 2019 to 2020 be viewed as an anomaly. The number of gun sales has increased most years since 1999. Sales first topped 25 million in 2016, 20 million in 2013, 15 million in 2011 and 10 million in 2006. The first full year the FBI kept data was 1999, when total sales were 9,138,123.
The state with the most sales in January was Illinois at an extraordinary 1,002,118. That is 24% of national sales for the month. However, the state has slightly less than 4% of the national population. The same pattern holds true for the state that had the second-highest gun sales figure last month. Kentucky's figure hit 421,790, or just over 10% of the national total. Its population is only 1.3% of the U.S. number.
At the current pace, gun sales in America will reach almost 50 million this year. It is too early to say whether the January trend will continue. However, it is nearly assured that 2021 will set another annual record.

p.s. it's really beyond me to see smart people go out of their way to blame anything beyond the fucking elephant in the room; BLACK LIVES MATTER 2020 PROTESTS TO DEFUND AND/OR ABOLISH POLICE WITH ASSOCIATED RIOTS, LOOTING AND OTHER CIVIL UNREST DURING A PANDEMIC when nobody knew what was going to happen.
Any logical person might at least consider buying a gun to protect oneself if there weren't going to be any police around and people would soon be stealing what they wanted from houses, or right off your body, not just stores next time. All the more reason for the already criminally minded and those equating power with guns and killing (the rap world for example) to find gun ownership and absolute necessity? People were being attacked for being middle class eating in outdoor restaurants and for having houses in formely poor neighborhoods for chris sake, government buildings were being burned to the ground.
Why o why at this point are people so hesitant to blame BLM / George Floyd 2020 anti-police protests for the predicament we are now in with 8 gazillion more guns out there and shrugs about everyone using them because according to The Woke you know police are always worse
BLM PROTESTS IN 2020 DURING A PANDEMIC WERE THE CAUSE, it's just so obvious: MASSIVE GROWTH in gun ownership with everyone being okay with that because police were pulling back and prosecutors were pulling back , fewer of them want those jobs (who would?!!!) at the same time LOTS OF CRIMINALS BEING LET OUT EARLY because of covid and JUDICIAL SYSTEM BASICALLY ON HIATUS...
To even begin to staunch the tide now: Woke anti-police and anti-prison talk has to be ridiculed, ruthlessly. Young people need to go back to FEARING, yes fearing, police, the law and the courts. It's too late to do it a nicer way, precisely because we let a ton more guns out there and we are never going to get those back and until more people start feeling they don't need them, the gap for those who can''t get one by buying second hand or stealing will now be filled with ghost guns.
There is no alternative now, the guns are out there: law and order and respect for it has to be real tough, and give a shit about your poverty or problems, solving those come after a secured society. Security is the # 1 reason civilization exists, everything else comes after that.
We do have to go back to the Dick Tracy model, where the cops are the good guys and the robbers are the bad guys and I am very sorry that BLM fucked this all up for people of color but they did, they really really did. Blame them, one of the worst most counterproductive protest movements of all times, of all times.
If you want an example of how quickly civilization can devolve to good guys vs. bad guys you can check out Ukraine right now, it's not a video game, it really can happen and right quick.
To be fair pandemic in jails/prisons and fears of such + infected/out-sick staff & guards & police likely pushed some of the stupider early paroles and no charges for petty crime laws that feed the increase in streetcrime and lawlessness, not just the BLM protests/woke socialist encampments in Portland/Seattle. However, turning up heat on police no doubt lowers their willingness to take chances for a more hostile public, esp. in areas where they'll be viewed thru a racism prism - like most crimeridden areas.
yes, I mention that, it is a part of the perfect storm during a pandemic. But what threw it over the top, really, be honest: protests, looting and rioting against police and law and order itself! (Many places are still having a very hard time hiring, who wants that job? anyone sane?)
Without those protests, the pandemic problem of reducing the prison and jail population during the pandemic would have been a much smaller effect because there would still be respect for law and order. The raison d'etre of the protests was to degrade the respect for law and order system we had. They really shouldn't have been allowed in a pandemic! Not at all! With many downtowns empty and unprotected. And first responders of all kinds out sick. Martial law type situation was called for, really, no protests, NONE, cause: police are busy with a pandemic. And we allowed bored white kids with dreams of anarchism to let loose cause no nightclubs were open to distract them. The professional looters moved in pronto, they could see the opportunity: collapse of law and order.
Trump loved every minute protests were allowed in blue cities.
Coachella is going on right now. THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT IN A COUNTRY WITH A LOT OF GUNS. YOU HAVE "POLICING" No protesting about the "policing". IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU STAY HOME.
Some of the security measures you will notice upon your arrival such as bag checks, walk-through metal detectors (magnetometers) for all attendees, staff and performers, and dog sweeps. Please note that we will implement searches upon festival entry.
edit to add: by the way, before I could find a tweet quote of this story without commentary, after searching for it by article title, I had to scroll past a whole lot of educated left types tweeting the story basically with the comment "WE WARNED YOU HE WAS DUMB". Way to win friends and influence people? NOT. More like a way to antagonize working class people who see that all the rich people in NYC have them in their skyscrapers and airports as do institutions like courts and large high schools.
Accidents and injuries remain the leading cause of death for children and young adults. Until recently, motor vehicle accidents were the number one cause of accidental death in these age groups. But in recent years, gun-related injuries surpassed motor vehicle accidents as the most common cause of death in youths and children, and this number continues to increase each year.
An article published in the April 16, 2022 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reviewed this change, and discussed implications and likely reasons for this shift. The authors, based at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Department of Health Policy and Management at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard, delineated the public implications of this shift. The authors first describe how accidental injury is the leading cause of death in children and adolescents. In fact, accidents remain the leading cause of death among all individuals between ages 1 and 44 years. Congenital abnormalities remain the leading cause of death in the first year of life.
While accidents in general remain the most common cause of death in youth, for those ages 1 to 24 years, death due to gun violence and accidental injury are now more common than death due to motor vehicle accidents. While accidents and resultant injuries and fatalities are hard to reduce down to zero or even close to that, there are multiple means of prevention when it comes to reducing risk
[....]
The incidence in firearm-related deaths in youths began to climb in 2014, leveled off between 2016 and 2019, and then rose again sharply in 2020. Motor vehicular-related deaths dropped in this age group between 2016 and 2019, and went up slightly (although not nearly as precipitously as the rate of gun-related deaths) in 2020 [.....]

Seems to me that the old school NRA crochety old white guy is history. They're gone!
Politically, guns are no longer an old white guy thing, nor are they a "red state" thing, nor are they a rural thing. To talk otherwise is just to mark yourself as old, clueless and out of touch. (The guy upthread complaining that the SC nightclub should not be described as "rural" was correct.)
I do in fact clearly remember the suggestion on a dagblog thread that since traffic police are incurably racist, that we should have cameras doing that work, as if it wasn't really that important of a community service
Part of the problem is those who should be advocating most loudly for more police enforcement decided a few years ago that discretionary police enforcement is racist and should be replaced with cameras and engineering. But then it turned out cameras are racist, too.

A Louisiana woman was stabbed to death on a Facebook Live video after her killer allegedly tied her hands to a car steering wheel using jumper cables, cops and reports said Tuesday.
Earl Lee Johnson Jr., 35, was arrested for the murder of Janice David, 34, who was found beaten and fatally stabbed in a car at 9:52 p.m. Monday, Baton Rouge Police Department said.
The Facebook Live session lasted about 15 minutes and came after a three or four-day “drug binge,” Sgt. L’Jean McKneely told reporters Tuesday.
“Apparently they were involved in some drug usage together for a couple of days and the end result — as everyone has seen on Facebook Live — is a very gruesome, very evil act,” McKneely said.
Johnson allegedly choked, beat then stabbed David, cops said. The suspect had also allegedly tied David’s hands to the car steering wheel with jumper cables, WBRZ reported.
Someone reported the gruesome footage to Facebook, which notified police. Responding officers found the car abandoned in a parking lot of an office building called Sherwood Tower, reports said.
Johnson was arrested Monday on an unrelated car theft case, where he was allegedly injured during a police pursuit. He admitted to the killing when questioned, the TV station said. Johnson had been convicted of armed robbery in 2007 and was sentenced to 15 years behind bars, WRBZ said [....]

Gascón said he thought the sentencing was appropriate considering the circumstances, as he claimed Maynor allegedly made a series of jail calls that demonstrated “no remorse” and that were “very disturbing in nature.”
“Our office has and will continue to seek to hold accountable those that cause grievous harm in our community. That is especially true in cases where people show little or no remorse,” he said.

[....] A mother is heartbroken after learning her son was shot over the weekend.
Elizabeth Greene, the mother of 19-year-old Jamear Owens, said her son was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I didn't even get to say goodbye to him. The last thing I saw of my son was a tattoo," said Greene.
Metro police said multiple people were shot, one fatally, early Sunday at a business on South Madison Avenue.
"I got a call, and I said 'Hello.' It was silent. I called the number back, and my son was crying, and he said, 'Jamear is gone.' I said, 'What?' He said, 'Ma, Jamear is gone.' I said, 'What are you talking about?' He said, 'Ma, Jamear is dead," said Greene.
Greene said she sent her sons on an errand for her business Saturday night.
Instead of coming home right after, they decided to swing by a party late Saturday at Pollo Los Reyes.
"He was out there, and I didn't even know he was out there. I would not have had that, but of course, that was a decision that he made," said Greene.
According to police, the party was hosted for ages 21 and under, with some guests as young as 14.
It's unclear what sparked the shooting, but when police got there, they found one victim in critical condition in a nearby parking lot.
"Saturday could have totally avoided," Greene said.
Just hours before the shooting, Greene said she met Jon Johnson, and they were discussing ways to support youth in their community. By providing them the tools to be successful and not turn to violence.
"We have to ask ourselves, why are these children in the streets in the beginning? Because they don't have that. They don't have someone to take them under their wing and say 'Hey, this is the right way,'" said Johnson.
IMPD said two other people were hurt in the shooting and arrived at the hospital independently. No arrests have been made.

DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver grand jury indicted 10 gang members on 114 felony counts Monday following a two-year investigation.
The gang is known as “FBP,” an abbreviation for Few But Plenty, in which the majority of incidents were drive-by shootings, a release from the Denver district attorney’s office said. Forty-seven victims were allegedly involved and the 10 members are facing several charges, including conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree.
“We believe these individuals are responsible for 14 separate incidents totaling 47 victims in the Denver metropolitan area – most of them drive-by shootings of rivals,” Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said.
“This is a good day for public safety and demonstrates my office’s ongoing commitment to join with our local and federal partners to aggressively combat outbreaks of violent crime within our city. I want to recognize the commitment and diligence of the members of the RAVEN task force and my office who have worked relentlessly to put these cases together,” McCann said.
“Today is the culmination of a nearly two-year multi-agency effort to stop the commission of violent crimes being committed across the metro area by a street gang,” Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent in Charge David S. Booth said. “While these arrests have certainly made our communities safer, we remain steadfast in our commitment to continue to target violent offenders and crime guns.”
Other charges they’re facing are criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree, criminal assault in the first degree, illegal discharge of a firearm and numerous other counts. [....]
^ is a result of the federal government involvement in urban crime started, like it or not-reality bites sometimes, under THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION (with direct involvement by BILL BARR among others) while a lot of Democrats were supporting "defund police" protests and even anarchists attacking Federal property and agents in places like Portland and burning of cities like Kenosha
DENVER – United States Attorney Jason Dunn presented a Colorado law enforcement task force with national recognition from the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program. Colorado’s Regional Anti Violence Enforcement Network (RAVEN) is a multi-agency task force from 13 different federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies who received a national achievement award for Outstanding Partnership/Task Force from the Department of Justice. U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn presented the award to task force leaders at the Aurora City Council Chamber this afternoon.
“RAVEN is model program,” said U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn. “It is part of the gold standard in law enforcement relationships that is the hallmark of Colorado law enforcement. This is making a real difference to our communities.”
RAVEN was recognized for its outstanding work in support of the PSN Program, which has brought important results to the Denver Metropolitan Area. Thanks to the work of the task force, 122 violent offenders were prosecuted in 2019, and another 147 violent offenders were prosecuted this past year.
RAVEN task force members come from the ATF, the Aurora Police Department, the Denver Police Department, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Lakewood Police Department, the Denver District Attorney’s office, the Colorado Department of Corrections, the Rocky Mountain HIDTA, HSI, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the United States Attorney’s Office.
Revitalized in 2017, PSN is a critical piece of the Department’s crime reduction efforts. PSN has focused on prosecuting those individuals who most significantly drive violence in our communities, and supports and fosters partnerships between law enforcement and schools, the faith community, and local community leaders to prevent and deter future criminal conduct.
are some Republicans and Trump supporters gonna talk about this in campaigns for Nov. 2022 campaigns? You betcha!
There's one thing about the local Dems in Denver, I do distinctly recall them being quite unfriendly to out-of-state BLM "protesters", the mayor announcing something like "go home, you are not welcome here" just after a night of black block types just breaking windows in the downtown area, before things ramped up at all. If only more blue cities had done "sister souljah" like attacks on the agitators in 2020 instead of allying with them, they might not be blamed so much now for high crime.
But nooo, instead of supporting Fed and local projects like this, most blue city governments were supporting dissing law enforcement as racist and supporting defunding it and letting gang bangers out on the streets in the name of a supposed racist judicial system. All basically because of emotional reaction to what happened to one man (Geo. Floyd) and one viral video and lots of hype about police abuse stories while totally disregarding actual facts about the number of police abuse victims vs. the massively larger number of victims of minority crime.

Under 2019 UCR rules, an arrest is classified by the most severe event: viol > prop > drugs > pub order.
Arrest me for public drunknessess, find weed during the search?
In NIBRS, an arrest for any crime in the incident clears the entire incident. So I actually worry clearances will be misleading. He said - she said sexual assaults are hard to solve, but if you find weed on the suspect or a weapon offense --> sexual assault cleared.
But I'm missing your issue. NIBRS doesn't provide context for what led to either law enforcement learning of the crime or finding probable cause to make an arrest. But it never pretended to collect that info
If it did that would be very helpful. Like the debate about police being involved in traffic stops. Law enforcement says traffic stops lead to discovering people with warrants or guns in the car. Would be very useful to have that info quantified nationally.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police say at least three people were injured in a shooting Friday in northwest Washington, D.C., and city officials are warning people in the area to stay inside because of an “active threat.”
Dozens of law enforcement officers responded to the scene near Connecticut Avenue and Van Ness St. in the Van Ness neighborhood of Washington. The incident is just down the road from Howard University Law School.
Police in tactical gear were seen escorting people out of an apartment building. Officers pointed their rifles upward toward other buildings and windows as the people moved quickly down the street with their hands raised above their heads.
At least one person was seen being led away by police in handcuffs.
Authorities said the three shooting victims included two men and a juvenile female. The Metropolitan Police Department is warning people who live in the nearby neighborhoods of Cleveland Park and Van Ness to shelter in place.
The University of the District of Columbia, which is located nearby, went into lockdown, telling students and staff to shelter and stay in place. In a tweet, the college said there was an “active shooting incident near student housing” and the suspect remained at large.
Video posted on Twitter captured the sound of bursts of rapid gunfire.

CHICAGO — For months, Anna Balla, 47, tolerated the unruly behavior she says has become commonplace when riding the “L” downtown: smoking, harassment and even a stranger’s uninvited use of her shoulder to vault himself into a spot in a crowded Chicago train.
But it was a ride in March that made her swear off the trains completely. At a busy stop in the heart of the Loop during rush hour, she saw a young shirtless man yanking a woman and hitting her with an empty beer bottle as she cowered and screamed on the platform. Ms. Balla bolted from the packed car and fled to the street.
“I was just worried that someone was going to pull out a gun, or if the cops arrived, it would become a shootout,” said Ms. Balla, a museum registrar in Chicago. “It had that feel to it.”
Just as a number of major cities are trying to lure people back to formerly bustling downtowns, leaders are confronting transit crime rates that have risen over prepandemic levels in New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Earlier this month, a shooting on a subway train in Brooklyn injured 23 people. In other cities, stories of violent assaults, muggings and stabbings on buses and trains dominate the evening news and worried conversations in neighborhood apps.
Low ridership has left many passengers saying they feel more vulnerable than before. In Philadelphia, the number of certain serious crimes reported on public transit is higher than before the pandemic, and in New York about equal to previous levels, even though ridership in both places is significantly lower. In other cities, there are fewer crimes being reported than in 2019, but the crime rate is up because there are so few passengers [....]

As part of the effort to address inequities in the justice system, the White House announced new steps to help those reentering society after incarceration, including expanding hiring for formerly incarcerated people. The Biden administration will allocate $145 million to developing "reentry plans" for incarcerated persons, which would connect them to resources, such as jobs, housing and loans upon being released.

This shooting at a children’s baseball game in Charleston, South Carolina, isn’t an anomaly. This is America’s new normal, enabled by greedy gun lobbyists and lawmaker allies. And if they have their way, no one will be safe anywhere.
I just don't know if her tactic of blaming "greedy gun lobbyists and lawmaker allies" is going to work that well anymore, though. All of a sudden, in 2020 and 2021, tons of people who never thought about owning guns and weren't into gun manufacturers' marketing went out and bought guns when "defund police" protests and riots became an epidemic during a pandemic. The marketing was furnished by BLM and Covid, actually, the message was: better safe than sorry. Nearly every voter probably knows someone who was a first-time gun buyer if they didn't buy one themself.
And now the Russian invasion of Ukraine has just reinforced the olde NRA/2nd Amendment message that a democracy is not safe unless everyone in it is armed....men there who never owned a gun or used one have now been given a gun and a crash course and told to shoot Russians....
They're not selling guns in stores in Ukraine, are they? IIRC they are distributed to people who have applied and then have been approved to fight for the country.
That's how it is largely done all over the planet. They are a commercial item here and hence the neverending debate that we have.
I'm going to double down on this one. There is not one country on earth that doesn't have guns. There's only one that sells them as a consumer item. That country has mass shootings.
It's a very good point you make. The question is what to do about it. First, the water over the dam problem - a gazillion guns are now out there in this country and will last a long time and be passed to others. Second, now there is the availability of the option of ghost guns (which may even derail a lot of regulations that worked up to this point in other countries.)
I imagine that there are also a gazillion guns in Israel. Nevertheless, you don't hear about a random person with mental health issues letting rip on a subway platform. Since everyone is required to have military service, Israelis are actually much more likely to have access to a very powerful firearm.
In fact, Palestinian terrorists have to improvize, throwing rocks and creating their own explosives, as they generally don't have access to the things Israelis have. They don't just transfer guns from Israel to Gaza the way someone would from Nevada to California.
The issue really is the sort of market economy and accompanying philosophy that we have in this country. We imprison porn actors for rape and we put mass shooters away but we do nothing to restrain and regulate the society so that those people choose a different avenue because that wouldn't make money. In fact, whatever the penalty is, we give them the tools they want and give them the infamy they seek, all while condemning them and shaking our head.
Capitalism is amoral - it will sell pharmaceuticals that turn someone's brain upside down, guns meant for warfare, and any other manner of items that should be looked at with shame. It will sell freedom fries one decade and wokeism the next. It doesn't give a F.
I think this is waaaay smart, he is playing the tough boss of police to co-opt the whole ideological hatred of police by the "defund" crowd. No one likes lazy ass public servants not doing their job, especially New Yorkers. This issue, it's a uniter, not a divider. As a skeptical constituent, I am pleased! Very savvy -

.....The event was organized after a Rock Hill shooting incident on Tuesday that left three teens dead. The investigation remains ongoing, The Herald reported Friday morning.
Maurice Sutter, a lead organizer of the event and a leader in Rock Hill’s local Black Lives Matter chapter, told The Herald that part of the reason for organizing the rally is to get leaders’ attention focused on the city’s gun violence issue. “I’m not going to say this is going to be the end of gun violence,” Sutter said in an interview Friday. “But I am going to say that us as leaders and city council and the mayor — if we don’t put a stop to this and create more things for these teenagers, Rock Hill is going to continue to get worse. We’re building houses and storage units and everything else, but we’re not building nothing for these kids.”
Sutter also said he is advocating for Ahmik Coleman. Coleman, 17, was charged Wednesday as an adult with two counts of murder, according to arrest warrants obtained by The Herald from the Rock Hill police department. Sutter said he is trying to help raise funds for a defense attorney for Coleman. A gofund.me campaign started Friday morning for that purpose, and has attracted more than 50 donors and had raised just under $2,000 by time of this article’s online publication.....

New York City’s luxury retail outlook is dim — literally.
Swanky Madison Avenue shops on the Upper East Side are lowering lights, locking doors and opening by appointment only in an effort to combat a relentless scourge of brazen daytime shoplifters terrorizing the glitzy thoroughfare.
The Carolina Herrera boutique near 67th Street has been robbed so many times it now pretends to be shuttered, with lights dimmed and door dead-bolted shut, even during normal business hours.
“It looks closed,” lamented one bride-to-be, hoping to drop six figures on three Herrera dresses for the walk down the aisle and post-ceremony receptions. She noted it’s a “bad look” for one of the world’s most celebrated luxury shopping districts.
Shop workers opened the door after seeing the future bride and a friend peering through the window.
Caption:Manager Gabriele locks the door in the
Carolina Herrera store on Madison Ave.

“The normal thing now today is to lock our doors on Madison Avenue,” confessed Carolina Herrera sales associate Michelle Singh, while showing off the fashion accessories, handbags most notably, that have proven a favorite target of an apparent organized band of shoplifters brazenly plucking luxury fashions off the shelves of avenue boutiques [....]
Singh was at the center of one recent theft, when a “normal-looking man in his 40s” made off with “four or five” bags from Venezuelan-American fashion maker and NYC resident Herrera. Singh tried to stop the hoodlum from walking out with the stash, but was encouraged by colleagues to let him unlock the door and leave for fear he might turn violent.
“We don’t feel safe,” chimed in a Carolina Herrera store manager, who gave his hame only as Michael. “You feel violated when they come in.” The store has locked its doors “for at least several months” to limit unfettered access.
Nearby, Chanel (at 64th) and Prada (at 70th) are also locked during normal business hours, with well-dressed security guards standing by, opening the entrance for potential shoppers after eyeing them through the door windows. An NYPD patrol car with two officers sat outside Prada Friday afternoon.
In February, a team of seven thieves strolled out of The Real Real on Madison at 71st Street with nearly $500,000 worth of handbags and jewelry, in the shopping district’s most brazen daytime heist.
“It’s very much an organized crime model,” said Matthew Bauer, president of the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District.
The shoplifters, who often go un-prosecuted under soft-on-crime Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, are “just the tip of the iceberg” and “following orders” for a much larger crime syndicate, Bauer said.
“These gangs are more aggressive and violent than in years past,” the National Retail Federation reported in its 2021 security survey, noting that 69 percent of outlets witnessed an increase in organized retail crime over the past year.
Bauer’s organization teamed up with other Midtown BIDs this month to demand action from Gov. Hochul against the staggering crime spree that is tarnishing New York City’s rep for luxury shopping.
The 19th Precinct, which includes much of the Upper East Side, reports a dramatic 47 percent rise in grand larceny year, with 470 incidents so far in 2022, up from 320 incidents at the same time last year. Petty larceny has also skyrocketed, up nearly 60 percent from 709 incidents in 2021 to 1,129 in 2022.
There has been a shocking rise in theft across the city, with grand larceny up 54 percent and petty larceny up 42 percent, according to NYPD data. Citywide shoplifting complaints have jumped 81 percent in the past year, Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael LiPetri said in April.
The fallout for shoppers is that a stroll down Madison Avenue has lost much of its luster and spontaneity. Many retailers now encourage, or even require, shoppers to make appointments before they open the doors.
Peggy Hogan of Westchester was hoping to browse Monique Lhuillier on Madison at 69th Friday afternoon, but was stunned to learn she could not get an appointment until May 17.

Just sayin'.
by artappraiser on Mon, 04/18/2022 - 4:07pm
p.s. and hey, why not let all the Black male felons out on bail, bond and early parole if they're not going to hurt white people?

by artappraiser on Wed, 04/20/2022 - 8:33pm
White men aren't really part of the show anymore, so there's no reason for them to bug out? That's my guess.
People like Tucker Carlson assume that means "the end of men" but there's a lot of freedom when the world stops paying attention to you.
Also, artappraiser, not to harp on an old topic, but a lot of faux disorders that were previously marketed at young white men and were treated with heavy pharmaceuticals are now being targeted at people of color. I will suggest a correlation, as it's been a trend for the past few years.
The spin on marketing over the past few years has been that these disorders are underdiagnosed in women and people of color generally, thus making getting diagnosed with a mental disorder or learning disability almost sound like a privilege that only white people previously enjoyed.
by Orion on Mon, 04/18/2022 - 11:25pm
re: antidepressants - whatever might be the correlation, it would be tiny compared to this elephant in the fucking room and therefore doesn't mean much:
Guns in America: Nearly 40 million guns were purchased legally in 2020 and another 4.1 million bought in January
Douglas A. McIntyre, 24/7 Wall Street, FEB. 10, 2021
by artappraiser on Tue, 04/19/2022 - 1:13am
p.s. it's really beyond me to see smart people go out of their way to blame anything beyond the fucking elephant in the room; BLACK LIVES MATTER 2020 PROTESTS TO DEFUND AND/OR ABOLISH POLICE WITH ASSOCIATED RIOTS, LOOTING AND OTHER CIVIL UNREST DURING A PANDEMIC when nobody knew what was going to happen.
If you want an example of how quickly civilization can devolve to good guys vs. bad guys you can check out Ukraine right now, it's not a video game, it really can happen and right quick.
by artappraiser on Tue, 04/19/2022 - 1:23am
To be fair pandemic in jails/prisons and fears of such + infected/out-sick staff & guards & police likely pushed some of the stupider early paroles and no charges for petty crime laws that feed the increase in streetcrime and lawlessness, not just the BLM protests/woke socialist encampments in Portland/Seattle. However, turning up heat on police no doubt lowers their willingness to take chances for a more hostile public, esp. in areas where they'll be viewed thru a racism prism - like most crimeridden areas.
by PeraclesPlease on Tue, 04/19/2022 - 1:30am
yes, I mention that, it is a part of the perfect storm during a pandemic.

U.S. Department Of Justice Recognizes Colorado Task Force With National Achievement Award In Support Of Project Safe Neighborhoods
RAVEN Receives National Outstanding Partnership/Task Force Award
are some Republicans and Trump supporters gonna talk about this in campaigns for Nov.

^ a reminder why this is extra big news, he is Rihanna's baby daddy and he's been parading her around to all her photo ops in which she wears fashions that proudly accentuate the baby belly, even leaving it bare sometimes, he's like a Rihanna accessory where you can't totally successfully show off the baby belly without the baby daddy on one arm as well-this has been huge news in Black pop subculture and among fashionistas

Here's a WaPo video, as I am trying to figure: just where were those social workers?!!! I see at the beginning a Black man and woman running behind a (Black) cop and next to another (Black) cop aiming a rifle sky high. Must be they were running away from the cops, upset they were there. ACAB, no matter what race. I wonder where the violence interrupters in lawn chairs and the BLM community self-government negotiators were, surely they could have wrested the three rifles from the sniper...to like just go to the 5th floor and knock (of course, forced entry would be fascist) and say "please stop shooting". I know they weren't the big team of guys in green uniforms riding on the green van, those were more fascist forces like the cops...abolish em all, they're not needed.

by artappraiser on Tue, 04/26/2022 - 5:15pm
I just don't know if her tactic of blaming "greedy gun lobbyists and lawmaker allies" is going to work that well anymore, though. All of a sudden, in 2020 and 2021, tons of people who never thought about owning guns and weren't into gun manufacturers' marketing went out and bought guns when "defund police" protests and riots became an epidemic during a pandemic. The marketing was furnished by BLM and Covid, actually, the message was: better safe than sorry. Nearly every voter probably knows someone who was a first-time gun buyer if they didn't buy one themself.
And now the Russian invasion of Ukraine has just reinforced the olde NRA/2nd Amendment message that a democracy is not safe unless everyone in it is armed....men there who never owned a gun or used one have now been given a gun and a crash course and told to shoot Russians....
by artappraiser on Tue, 04/26/2022 - 6:38pm
They're not selling guns in stores in Ukraine, are they? IIRC they are distributed to people who have applied and then have been approved to fight for the country.
That's how it is largely done all over the planet. They are a commercial item here and hence the neverending debate that we have.
I'm going to double down on this one. There is not one country on earth that doesn't have guns. There's only one that sells them as a consumer item. That country has mass shootings.
by Orion on Tue, 04/26/2022 - 7:57pm
It's a very good point you make. The question is what to do about it. First, the water over the dam problem - a gazillion guns are now out there in this country and will last a long time and be passed to others. Second, now there is the availability of the option of ghost guns (which may even derail a lot of regulations that worked up to this point in other countries.)
by artappraiser on Tue, 04/26/2022 - 9:51pm
It doesn't give a F.
by Orion on Tue, 04/26/2022 - 11:34pm
I think this is waaaay smart, he is playing the tough boss of police to co-opt the whole ideological hatred of police by the "defund" crowd. No one likes lazy ass public servants not doing their job, especially New Yorkers. This issue, it's a uniter, not a divider. As a skeptical constituent, I am pleased! Very savvy -
