[....] “Something turned on during the pandemic and lit a fire,” said Jue, a Chinese American mother of two girls, ages 3 and 5, living on the west side of San Francisco. Throughout the pandemic, Jue watched as violent hate crimes against Asian Americans brought fear to the community with not enough response from local law enforcement or prosecutors. As the school closures wore on and on in California, Jue saw her local school board discuss progressive policy issues like renaming schools ahead of focusing on simply returning students to the classroom.Jue, who generally considers herself a Democrat, recalled her anger at liberal local politicians.
“They care about policies that don’t really help someone who just lives in the city and just want to be safe, who wants their kids to be educated well,” she said. “They forgot the core problems for regular people. I wanted to do something to try to change and take that power back. It was fear and frustration, a lot of frustration, that I turned into action.”
Her involvement began with stuffing envelopes for recall campaigns against the district attorney and several school board members and then grew – she even appeared in Chinese language campaign ads for a moderate Democrat running for city supervisor.
It was a political awakening replicated to varying degrees by other Asian Americans in San Francisco, resulting in a series of political upheavals in one of the United States’ most progressive cities – including a moderate White man unseating a progressive Chinese American incumbent for supervisor of the majority-Asian American Sunset District
California activists warn that these shifts in the politics of San Francisco – a place that has long been a beacon for progressives – are a signal to national Democrats ahead of 2024 that the party needs a course correction with the fastest growing racial group in the US – Asian Americans [....]

more, my underlining:
Core values for immigrant communities are not the same as those of elite, educated, white 'woke" liberals, even if they claim to be thinking of 'oppressed' p.o.c. The woke crap they learned at college is actually WRONG, and furthermore, self-defeating politically. (You don't have to believe me, ask Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, the only two Democrats in modern times to win the presidency and be re-elected to 2nd terms. Furthermore, the left 'woke' help fuel the predominance of conservative Republican nut cases, they couldn't get the traction they do without left woke prompting them.)

^ said more brutally, cause I'm sick of this shit (and had to deal with it personally in Manhattan during shithead liberal Mayor Dinkins, a situation that declined only a little bit during Giuliani but which Bloomberg cleaned up pronto):
professional advocates for the homeless lie! if you want to be nice you can call it spin rather than lies! they like to fancy that they are Jesus saving the lowly. Of course no one will go to a shelter with 'those other losers' unless you force them to go to a shelter! They rather stay in a tent on the street or sleep under your mailboxes because then can still deny the reality of the situation they are in.
Because they don't want to be made to face their failures, they don't want to admit they have sunk as low as 'those other guys', which in actuality they have. Meanwhile, their professional advocates want the rest of us to pay for an apartment for them, so they can supposedly work out their problems. Well, most won't work out their problems, unfortunately, if advocates keep enabling them! Like alcoholics, they have to "hit rock bottom" before they confront their problems. Hitting rock bottom for those already on the street (not those still like living in their car or some such) means: FORCE THEM TO GO TO A SHELTER. Giving them permanent free apartments? They'll NEVER get better, why should they?

the replies on Wallace-Wells thread are mostly of the same old, same old Dem arguments of "but but they are voting against their own economic interests" that I now find to be clueless old timey stuff, but these two are good:
One old trope that still really works, perhaps even better than it used to: "rich Hollywood liberals" Especially because the "rich Hollywood liberals" are increasingly seen as abandoning California after their liberal policies "ruined" it after Ronnie fixed that.

They're still using "immigrants are stealing your jobs" with "blacks are taking your college spots and getting all the handouts". Part of which is true, part hype.
Hillary offered West Virginia like $20bill in retooling, jobs for the future.
And instead they chose the grifter who promised coal would bounce back.
In general it takes less to sway smaller population areas - between ads & payments to influence the right people, while Fox propaganda channel 24x7 deeply helps the cause.
Why do you think Sister Souljahing is all it takes in 2023?
Fox will just say all liberals & left-centers need Sister Souljahing.
How is there so much acceptance on the right of abandoning Ukraine to Russia?
The hardball Gingrich-deLay-Ryan-McConnell has no parallel on the left. Winning is everything, so much that they often don't think about what they're "winning" as long as they feel like they're owning the Libs.

Mainly what I see is you bringing up the same old Democratic partisan sour grapes that enough voters care about culture wars over economic policy to turn national elections. Instead you should probably be glad that that is so because ths time the abortion issue may save the Democratic party even tho they won't soulja enough.
Then as regards your blast from the past; big big difference: Bill actually did the original Sister Souljah and as a governor led the DNC; Hillary on the other hand, had Marian Wright Edelman as a mentor and wouldn't stay home and bake cookies but wanted to always be on the ramparts somehow.

P.S. It's actually wouldn't be hard at all > Bill Maher already laid down a blueprint.
And nationally Democratic Party should make clear that they don't approve of 'The Squad'; not only do they help ZILCH, they hinder a great deal by enabling labeling of the party as "Woke". Easily replaced too, their constituents would vote for more moderate replacments. They'd all fail if the Dem party withdrew support and they had to run under the name of their true party, the DSA..

Oh fuck me, the Edelmans were the "can't hold their nose" types who got Bush elected over Gore (Gore would've protected that welfare transition even as many thought Great Society ghetto complexes needed an overhaul). Who said, "it's the economy, stupid?" Oh, Bill Clinton. But that was 19 fucking 92 and he had Ross Perot to siphon off the wacko conservative votes that are 31 years later the mainstay of the party. Sister Souljahing worked in that pre-internet pre-Fox pre-9/11 era where messages were easy to get through. Blast AOC & the Squad - do you think Fox will praise that? Do you think new improved rightwing CNN won't find a way to piss on it? Do you think Rachel and MSNBC will give it their blessing? You'll make Bill Maher happy, but he's not running for president.
Yes, if the Dems find the fulcrum to move the earth it might work. Maybe if Jim Clayburn came out again and lectured the party on woke victimology, but he'd have to address "niggers killing niggers" as a police dispatch friend used to get calls about (yes, from blacks).
But Biden's done a pretty goddamned good job on multiple fronts and still his ratings are iffy. I'm not "sour grapes" - I'm just realistic. Bush ran the economy into a wall and still Republicans lost by only 3 1/2% using the Tea Party blueprint of resentment that resonated. Obama won Pyrrhic victories, stayed popular, split the middle, but meantime the GOP was shredding the courts, the state and local offices. The Great Organizer largely got himself elected and ran 2 decent Administrations, but the Dems are largely a disorganized mess after that, and think themselves beholden to Bernie since 2016 more than AOC. The Russian lie about Hillary stealing the nomination (amplified by WikiLeaks) worked well enough to sour a good bit of the party since. More important, the farm clubs suck - the Dems don't have a strong block of new blood, so the Squad becomes the only alternative for attention. (yes, i was sickened by Pelosi referring to the ask that sick non-viting Feinstein step aside a bit was "sexist" rather than a practical measure.
And never forget Brexit as a great example of people doing horridly stupid things for both misguided cultural and economic reasons. The Harry & Rachel age is upon us.

This is way beyond Gingrich in Rodney King days - even George Wallace in Bull Connor days. Who is the constituency that makes this pardon attractive? Seriously, how is it an attractive political stance, how big is its audience, and how to move them in a more sane direction, at least the lukewarm adherents?
by PeraclesPlease on Sat, 04/15/2023 - 1:11am
why do you always revert to talking about the President as if that is the only person running? This is about figures like "The Squad" and California Dems and other "Woke" types serving to label the party because TOP DEMS LIKE BIDEN WON'T RENOUNCE THEM PUBLICLY. Meanwhile so many activist Dems bash Joe Manchin that there's strong rumors he's leaving the party, California becomes a Woke hell that everyone is trying to leave, and they're moving to Texas and Idaho, etc.
At the very least, the national Dem party should clearly differentiate itself from the Democratic Socialists oof America instead of letting them take over the party in places like Nevada so that nobody wants to vote for them?
Why do you ignore the Dem party losing control of so many state legislatures?
I believe Bill Maher speaks for a ton of voters when he says I DIDN'T LEAVE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEFT ME.
A reminder:The article at the head of this thread is not about Biden. (And Gingrich sheesh, what does he have to do with anything these days?)

p.s. as for the UK, personally I think it all started when Labour offered Corbyn as the alternative to the Tories. And it was all downhill from there. SOMEONE HAS TO OFFER THE MIDDLE for chrissakes - that's where the voters are.Once again, if Dems are ascared to 'Souljah' the Woke, who are hideously unpopular with voters, they should thank their lucky stars for the abortion thing, because that's the only thing that's going to save them in a lot of states. And sane GOP know it, they are scared shitless because of it, and they wouldn't be otherwise because: the Woke are the gift that keeps on giving
by artappraiser on Sun, 04/16/2023 - 5:50am
Nice try, but the Labour lost their competitive edge when Cameron pulled in Nick Clegg of the LibDems in 2010 (which killed the libDems as well) and Ed Miliband couldn't stick out, but Cameron also couldn't control his own Brexit/EU posturing and so the referendum took place. Corbyn only got in Sept 2015, was milquetoast in providing an opposition and never made it clear whether he supported Brexit or not, plus he shit his own nest with the anti-Semitism thing. After lots of hints & threats (basically several episodes of Sister Souljahing with no great results), Keir Starmer beat him out in Apr 2020, and now Corbyn's either out of the party or effectively so. Yes, he was a shite leader to have in at the time, but it's doubtful that Starmer earlier could've held off the anti-immigration and irrational EU hatred/bring back the empire fervor that shook the nation. Now 55% say it was a mistake with only 1/3 saying it was good, Even tho 45% say it's settled now, and nearly the same say both EU & non-EU immigration are higher than they would've been w/o Brexit.
Boris had a number of Russian ties (those trips to Italy...) that may have solidified his power (tho he became PM after Brexit - the intrigue between Jun '16 UK & Nov '16 IlUS were similar) while Corbyn may have at times been more sober about Putin & Russia - https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/russia-ukraine-war-jeremy-corbyn-r... - buy his latest slclaim that UK caused the Ukraine war sounds like that equivocating Putin support in method whatever other claims he makes. Anyway, he's largely like Lulu's VIPs now - the blame for Labour's probs lie with Labour plus the easily deluded UK public - support policies directly opposite to your stated wish, see the outcomes go tits up, and say "good enough" anyway - why would the Tories change their way? They basically win whatever they do, whatever they say, since 2010.
by PeraclesPlease on Sun, 04/16/2023 - 7:16am
Perhaps because the Dems don't have anyone standing out besides Biden & a couple others. I said the farm teams were shit. So is a national battle between Biden & AOC gonna cure that? Or is this famed Sister Souljahing something that has to occur all down the line, not as a Deus ex Machina save-the-party stunt?
I don't think you realize you focus on The Squad are in fairly obvious urban lib-zones, while you seem to be talking about taking back flyover country. Managing the CRT & related fights in Florida and Texas are quite a ways from NYC's perennial probs (and even there, Adams (& before, Bloomberg) is different from the reps in NYC's Congressional precincts.
And other areas might appreciate not talking about FL/TX/NYC and some West Coast cities (and likely not GA), where perhaps there could actually be some kind of productive dialogue. Are there some normies in Iowa? Kentucky? Gov of Tennessee just implemented some gun control measures. What's up in PA? How are things in Colorado (aside from Boehlert)? Is Indiana just Pete Buttigieg? Ohio's normally closely tied - how's the messaging there?
