I was on this train and encountered this man just before this happened. He was violently threatening passengers, including women and children. This happens almost every time I get on the subway now. When someone says "I am ready to go to jail" it isn't a figure of speech, it means they've reached a place where incarceration seems like the only way to be guaranteed a bed and a meal. and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. I am sorry for his death, but I have no doubt that the man who restrained him was protecting the public.

The man had 44 prior arrests, and yet he was still walking around free, threatening people on the train. Any blame should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the criminal justice system, which keeps allowing these career criminals, whether they are mentally challenged or not, back out on the streets without any proper rehabilitation.

While the death is saddening, I would support the actions of the 24 year old 100%. Someone screaming that they're ready to die on a subway makes me wonder if he's about to set off a bomb or kill people.

Ultimately this is the government's fault for not forcing mentally ill people on the street into facilities where they can get needed care. Nobody is doing them any favors by letting them terrorize subway riders (which I think the article describes as "respecting the rights of its most vulnerable residents").

If the government is not going to do its job and leave it to normal citizens to provide security in unpredictable and scary situations, then this 24 year old did the right thing in apprehending this person.

However, you do NOT engage with someone who is yelling and behaving erratically -- all that will do is make you a target for their frustrations and bad acts.

The only surprise is that this hasn't happened before. Many New Yorkers have been accosted by threatening mentally ill homeless. We're all afraid of being the next person shoved in front of a train or assaulted. So what do we do? I only hope that legislators consider stricter mental health laws and re-opening state hospitals. De-institutionalization was a serious mistake. We need to reverse it.

There have been numerous accounts of random individuals striking people without provocation, both above and below ground. One never knows where or when such an attack will occur. But it has created uneasiness and in the absence of solutions, people will begin defending themselves and their fellow citizens. It's sad but I have to believe those outraged by this have never been the victim of such an attack.

No Manhattan jury would convict this 24 year-old hero for anything in this case. Not in a million years. The deceased had over 40 prior arrests, including for assault. End of story. He was dangerous.

If the city and district attorney are uninterested in protecting the public, we will fend for ourselves. And this is what it will look like. That is the lesson.

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) - Youth baseball players were preparing to take the field at Huber Park Wednesday night when, in the street next to the park, an 18-year-old was shot and killed.

The victim, 18-year-old Markell Jackson, was found shot in the street, but Calcasieu Sheriff’s Office officials said shell casings were found in the park.

Bubba McCarty, a board member for Mid City Baseball, said in a posted statement that the incident did not involve any Mid City players or fans. Most of the league’s games had already ended for the day and the last game of the day was scheduled to be played

“Most of our players and parents had already vacated the park beforehand,” he said.

Man involved in four Mesa shootings identified, also connected to Phoenix shooting

MESA, AZ — Police have identified the man they say was involved in four shootings in Mesa that left three people dead and another injured. Officials believe the man is also connected to a fifth shooting in Phoenix that killed a man Friday afternoon.

20-year-old Iren Byers is in custody, facing four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Court documents say Byers was seen in security footage near 25th and Sheridan streets in Phoenix wearing a red shirt, black fanny pack over his shoulder, black pants, and black shoes at about 2:45 p.m.

The security footage allegedly shows Byers "make a furtive movement toward the victim consistent with pointing a gun." An apparent gunshot is then heard in the footage. When police arrived, they found 41-year-old Nicholas Arnstad dead next to the canal.

Court documents say Byers identified himself in the security footage and told investigators he shot Arnstad because he was "abusing fentanyl, which he did not like since [Byers'] brother abused the drug too." count of attempted murder

The second shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Friday at a park near North Beverly and Main Street in Mesa.

Surveillance video from a nearby apartment showed a man leaving the apartment complex and passing through an open fence to get into Beverly Park. A single gunshot is heard on the footage, according to court documents. When officers arrived, they found the body of a 41-year-old man.

Documents say Byers shot the man because he was talking about "blues." Mesa police officials confirm "blues" refer to fentanyl.

While at the park, officials say officers heard shots fired nearby and began searching the area. Around midnight on Saturday, officers found a third victim near Country Club Drive and 2nd Avenue.

A witness told investigators she noticed a man with a red shirt, black pants and a black fanny pack following her when she got off the light rail at Country Club Drive, according to court documents. She said she saw the man walk south on Country Club toward Broadway with another man.

Court documents say she watched them until she lost sight of them and heard a "loud pop." She then saw the same man she thought was following her run from the area. Byers told investigators he met the man at a Circle K and talked to him while riding the light rail. According to court documents, Byers told the man he wanted to smoke weed, but after the victim said he wanted to smoke "blues," Byers shot him. [....]

That’s exactly what happened today in #WashingtonDC aboard a Green Line train at the Navy Yard Station.

A man is now dead.
