The right was hostile to UBI because it said people would have no incentive to work, but many on the left were hostile because they rightly UBI might break down the demand for various other welfare agencies.

second half of your comment is very good point, much of what social workers now do is help people navigate a humongous complex bureaucratic web of possible government benefits
