Really good debunking by @Ed_Realist of the current rightwing freak-out. No, a woke Virginia school did not withhold National Merit Scholarship notifications. The entire thing is based on easily disproven claims. https://t.co/4UdoWU1YGU

Russia's hosted such meetings in the past, most recently Feb 2019
Russia has long lamented the US' "monopolization" of the peace process & tried to carve out a niche for itself: mediating among the disunited Palestinians/2

Location: U.S. Embassy and residential compounds
Events: Heavy gunfire is occuring around the area of the U.S. Embassy and residential compounds adjacent to the Trutier area of Tabarre. All Embassy personnel have been instructed to remain indoors and shelter-in-place until further notice. All others should avoid the area.
Actions to take:
- Avoid the area;
- Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;
- Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks; and
- If you encounter a roadblock, turn around and get to a safe area.

A mass expulsion of Afghan migrants could destabilize the region and fuel radicalization. The West should pressure Islamabad to change course.
All eyes on #Chad right now
Chad has two internet trunks coming into the country: One from the Red Sea via Sudan; the other from Cameroon. Not possible for the totality of the country's internet network to be shut unless done centrally. A lot of rumors swirling; few facts. https://t.co/N6bDJZ2ixO

Yes, and weather makes a big difference: anyone who has any experience going about Manhattan knows that many chronic homeless will go to a shelter by choice when it's bitter cold, but when it's warm enough to stay at their preferred street spot, they would rather stay there and have to be forced to move by police (or property owners as the case may be.) This is true through many mayoral adminstrations and decades of waning and waxing of numbers of homeless on the streets. (Also should be noted: it is very rare to see any kind of homeless families on the street at night in NYC - it is virtually ALL single individuals. Families don't risk being on the streets at night.)
So I am VERY open to the argument that many of the homeless on the streets of California cities are recent transients from other states - they go there for the weather! So they can stay outdoors instead of going to a shelter! (Heck I would make the same choice!) And they have many more subsidies than elsewhere, so moving there if a homeless person can manage it, via Greyhound or whatever, is a smart choice for them.

good question inspired by another VA school thing;

Horrid - list was received from Focus On The Family, and the school board head just checked to see if any books were on the religious jackasses' list
4 from Toni Morrison, 3 from Steven King ffs, 2 already old Anne Rice vampire books, and then Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale? These guys come across as real stupid dicks.
I remember Perks as being a dull film - will have to check out the book. But isn't it written about bad high school experiences? Aren't drugs, sex, suicide, abuse, etc part of the landscape to contemplate, vs how Helen launched 1000 ships a few millennia ago? (presumably someone out to censor the naughty bits and horrid behavior out of that Bible as well - getting drunk & sleeping with both your daughters? Naughty Lot.)

Seems to me that in too many cases whoever can shout the loudest and cause the most trouble for the local school board gets their way with the curriculum. And that shouldn't be the case. I dunno how to solve it, though. Elected school boards have the problem of pandering for votes, but appointed officials have the problem of pandering to educational theorists where institutions have been overtaken by radicals right or left.
