Republicans Back Away from Medicare Cuts

Last week, I called the Republicans' budget "a dead plan walking." I was referring in particular to the proposal to "reform" Medicare by replacing direct payments with vouchers for private insurance. Most Americans are not pleased by this proposal, which they correctly regard as a benefits cuts, and many of them have said so angrily at town hall meetings across the country.

It seems that the GOP got the message. The New York Times reports that House Republicans are backing away from the Medicare proposal they voted for just last month.

During Thursday's budget negotiations, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor didn't talk much about Medicare. "He didn’t need to talk about it in that room," said one participant. "Everyone knows it's dead." Cantor acknowledged to reporters, "The reality is this president has excoriated our budget plan and the Medicare proposal in the plan."*

But there's one problem with Republicans' apparent decision to excise the Medicare proposal: that's where the savings were supposed to come from. The Republican budget would save very little money until after 2022, when the Medicare cuts were to kick in.

According to Congressional Budget Office projections, the budget plan would save an amount equivalent to 12 percent of the GDP in 2050. A full two-thirds of those savings would come from Medicare and Medicaid savings.

Stripped of Medicare, the Republican budget proposal is half-naked, and its vaunted spending reductions are increasingly exposed as little more than a mechanism for funding the massive tax cuts it promotes.

*Oddly, Rep. Cantor did not mention a blogger named Michael Wolraich, aka Genghis, but my CNN op-ed did get a tweet from Ryan Love, newly elected Secretary for MN GOP CD2, Deputy Chair of SD35: @wolraich Leans Left, but nice article: "Republicans' Medicare blunder"

Those repubs got stung during their sojourn amongst the constituents; that is for sure.

This surprised me. To see republicans yelling at their reps was a sight to see.

I am waiting to see if the Ohio and Wisc Gov's begin to walk back some terrible terrible calls for legislation. I mean repubs on the state level have not been exactly cheered on by their constituents either.

This may become an extremely important point for the Obama Administration.

Everything was looking so bad! The birth certificate nuts were pouncing-25% of Americans were not sure their leader was American. Repubs were calling again for government shut down.

Between the bin Laden caper and these town hall meetings, we may see some better negotiations between the WH & the House.

None of this is surprising to to me. the vast majority of people, especially on the right, vote out of emotional convictions and not out of rationality. The same guy they vote for as a republican, with exactly the same stands, they would not vote for as a democrat. Simply because he's a democrat. the same is true, tho less so, on the left.

It reminds of a musician joke.

"An guitar player goes into a music store to purchase a new amplifier. The salesman shows him what they have. On is rated at 30 watts output and the other at 50 watts. The guitar player looks at each one and then after a few minutes says he'll take the 30 watt unit. The salesman says that the 50 watt unit is really a much better buy. The guitar player looks at them both again and insists on the 30 watt unit. The salesman, not understanding the decision asks him why ? The guitar player says, pointing at the the volume control on the 30 watt unit, "This one goe all the way up to 12. The other one only goes up to 10."

Yeah C, that was repeated in the movie THIS IS SPINAL TAP!

The only reason I reply is that you have one hell of a point here!

You can logically go on this scale from 1 to 10 to a scale of 1 to 11 or 12 or whatever until you do a little more research into what those scales represent.

The metaphor only goes so far without further digging or research.

    Good points!

Trying to reduce  Ryan to a bumper sticker how about..................

Cut Medicare and Bankers' taxes. Vote Republican!

My "champagne" theory of the OBL killing seems to be confirmed. The president was saving him for a rainy day. With the bounce the killing gives him, he will be able to take back the initiative in the budget fight, which would be essential in getting reelected.

If by "confirmed" you mean "completely irrelevant to this post," then yes, your theory seems to be confirmed.

How is linking to your own supposition that Obama was waiting for a politically advantageous moment to kill bin Laden proof of anything other than your inability to process facts that do not conform to your silly, simplistic pre-determined narratives?

Contrary to my expectations you were confirmed in your belief that Obama had the information for a considerable period before acting. You may or may not be confirmed in your "champagne"  theory.that he was doing so for crass reasons. If you are confrmed I'll acknowledge it.

I continue to consider it extremely unlikely not on moral grounds but because I can't conjure up any possible reward from delaying signiicant enough for Obama to risk his re-election on the hope Osama would sit still long enough for Obama to get him..
