    Easing tensions in Georgia

Reuters has a story headlined "U.S. to take control of Georgian ports: Saakasvili."

"You have heard the statement by the U.S. president that the United States is starting a military-humanitarian operation in Georgia," the Georgian president said in a television address.

"It means that Georgian ports and airports will be taken under the control of the U.S. defense ministry in order to conduct humanitarian and other missions. This is a very important statement for easing tension."

    Brilliant idea.

Putting armed Armed Americans and Russia within a few kilometres of each other -- what could possibly go wrong? This comes as Russia sinks a couple of Georgian ships off the port of Poti.

And if you had any doubts, Saaakashvili hopes to drag the U.S. into a shooting war, read this article that Josh linked to from the front page: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/14/world/europe/14saakashvili.html
Don't fall for it, guys. It's a trap.

What moral authority do we have to denounce Russia for invading a sovereign country?

None, of course. Anyone, anywhere in the world, had to get a chuckle out of the U.S. criticizing Russia for seeking "regime change" in Georgia.
The State Department, BTW, is now distancing itself from Saakashvili's claims of a planned U.S. military presence.
The Russians, however, took the idea seriously enough to halt any troop withdrawal, and push forward in places.
According to Britain's Telegraph, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said, "We understand that this current Georgian leadership is a special project of the United States, but one day the United States will have to choose."
I think by that he means TODAY.

How would you compare the terrain and population of Georgia to that of Afghanistan? I noticed some Congressmen proposing to suppy missiles and other arms to Georgia that reminded me of the arms we furnished the Taliban in Afghanistan. Maybe they've been watching Charlie Wilsons War.

Only in the twisted mind of a liberal could Iraq and Georgia be equal.

I just realized you really are from Canada. Now, are you a Canadian, or an expat? How long since you lived in the US? Do you vote here or in Canada? You do seem foreign. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make you seem sort of, well, un-American. The kind of person who could actually feel good when something bad happens to America. Like we're getting what we deserve or something. Any of that ring a bell? Or maybe you're just pretending to be from Canada. Hard to say. Right?

I almost didn't comment here, but since almost no one else was and since the bulldog sort of injected some reality here, I decided I'd go ahead and comment. It was a hard call, but I finally decided, what the hell, why not give the kid a comment. No rec, though. With just one rec, people might think you recommended your own post.
