In her acceptance speech for the Barbara Jordan Gold Medallion For Leadership, given to her at Texas Southern University in Houston, Hillary Clinton doesn't mince words about the systematic suppression of voter rights in this country. She points out in detail the abuses in North Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin and Florida. But she doesn't stop there, she calls out GOP candidates by name that as governors signed laws that made voting more difficult for citizens. As she names them, she makes it know just what they did sign into law that will hurt voters.
Secretary Clinton then throws down the gantlet with "What part of democracy are they afraid of?" Which she follows with "I believe every citizen has the right to vote. I believe we should everything we can to make it easier for every citizen to vote." The audience responded with a standing ovation. She then challenges the GOP to explain why?.
She continues with offering solutions with a national bill that calls for a Automatic National Registration of all citizens in all states for voting. She also includes 20 day early voting, weekend voting and evening voting. She leaves no stone unturned by talking about our out dated system from the past that needs modernized and up dated. She asks for more grass roots effort to get people to vote for people who will defend their right to vote.
The house is brought down in a second standing ovation with, " We need a Supreme Court that will protect the right of a person to vote then the right of a corporation to buy and election."
The speech was well written and delivered well. It was music to my ears to hear her call out the GOP for this and to back it up with details. This was historic to face the GOP down in a primary speech on their turf.
Here is the full speech.
Comments
Hilary puts the GOP on the spot. They have no credible response. Voter fraud is nonexistent. The. GOP wants to suppress votes. Every GOP candidate will say that Martin Luther King Jr was a personal hero. They will then act in a manner Martin Luther King Jr. would find appalling. The GOP is not an option for most black voters.
The speech marginalized Martin O'Malley who is burdened with the legacy of fashioning the Baltimore police department into a strong arm organization. Bernie Sanders has a strong Civil Rights history but Hillary likely gained black votes by being first out of the gate with this strong statement. Lincoln Chaffee is an unknown to most black voters.

O'Malley and Chaffee will keep the conservadems engaged I think Chaffee is just trying to burnish his Democratic accreditation and stay in the political game. You are right about Baltimore hurting O'Malley's chances even with other voters.

On this issue, she is right on. And calling out the Republicans and naming the governors is just what the Democrats have to do. Now the rest of the Democrats need to keep hammering these issue points. Even the candidates who are running for the nomination, stating where they agree with her and where they don't. Of course, Clinton needs to the do the same with her challengers.
We've will have spent eight years under Obama who opposed by the Republicans who didn't want Obama and/or the Democrats to get one achievement done: "No feathers in your caps." Even when it was legislation they had tried to get achieved before Obama. And for the vast majority of the time, the Republicans didn't break ranks on this focus.
I doubt the Republicans will change if Clinton, Sanders or some other Democrat wins the general election. The Democrats and the Independents who lean toward the Democrats need to argue about an issue and then when the leadership comes to a decision, they all need to hold their ground and hammer home their issue et al. At times some may have a moral conflict and can't support the decision, and that is okay, they just need to articulate why.
At some level it goes against the grain of the Democrats where everyone should just go in whatever direction or say whatever they want. But the Republicans have changed the rules of the game. That doesn't mean the Democrats have to embrace the Republicans. They just need fight fire with fire.

That speech was a hard push back on the Republicans. The Democrats have to keep in the public eye that the Republicans are working for the corporations and wealthy.
The senate races and house races also need to push hard to the left.

I don't how accurate my epiphany was a few weeks when I was on Skype with someone and said "Part of the problem is that Republicans make the Democrats and liberals the problem, while the Democrats go around saying the problem is with the intangible system." People need the concrete to direct their energies for and against. If all you do is leave one shaking one's fist at the sky out of frustration or anger, then they'll turn to someone who gives them someone or something concrete to channel their feelings upon.

She basically said to them that they are going to have to explain why they are afraid of democracy and why they are not for the common good?

Shaking her finger at the Supreme Court is straight out of Sanders' play book. Actually he has been pointing out voter discrimination for a long time in the well of the senate. Also he has been organizing a grass roots campaign and she called for one in this speech.
I think this will be an exciting election.

I was pleased to listen to Secretary Clinton discuss real Democracy.
WE NEED A KNEW VOTING RIGHTS ACT!

Christie is the first of the GOP clown car to say that Sec. Clinton supports voter fraud. This from the guy who punished Democrats who did not support his candidacy by causing a traffic jam. Other GOP candidates will follow his lead and label the GOP as racist. Democrats need minorities to win. Voter suppression pushes minorities to the Democrats.
It will be interesting how Dr. Ben Carson handles voter suppression. If he does not tow the GOP party line on restrictive ID requirements, he will be punished by the party leaders. If he tows the party line he will lose minority voters for the GOP. If Carson does not speak out about voter suppression, he will be seen as having no value to minority voters.

They don't want her to go around dividing the country. I thought they loved doing that. She has hit a nerve with that well written speech.

I knew the day before yesterday that she was going to make a speech about voter suppression. The fact that they are just now reacting to it tells me how much disarray there is with all these GOP hopefuls. They should of jumped on this last evening. This is really hard for them to defend, They just want their hands on some of that money that will be floating around out there from the GOP.

Walker has responded now. We haven't heard from Jeb yet.

George Soros is financially backing the court cases that Hillary's lawyer has filed against Ohio and Wisconsin. He has given them 5 million to do this. They plan other fillings against other states.
Texas liberal millionaires have been supporting Battle Ground Texas. This a group that has been working hard at getting people registered for the last 3 years. She met with Democratic party supporters that are wealthy just before the speech. This may of also been the reason for her choosing to kick off her voter suppression campaign in Texas.

What Driftglass calls the 'both siderist razor in the apple" below.
MSM: attempting to obfuscate and deflect Hillary's message on the right to vote:
Driftglass:
As Liberal misfits have been documenting ad nauseum since the dawn of blogging, the "Both Sides Do It" fairy tale is by far the most popular, lucrative and useful lie the mainstream media tells.

I guess they forgot about the long lines in Florida to vote. That was the product of the Republican State legislature.
