The Bishop and the Butterfly: Murder, Politics, and the End of the Jazz Age

    Houston, we've got a problem

On August 1 we knew all we were going to know about Trump and Hillary. And she had a comfortable lead. And Roger Ailes was running Fox.

On September 1 we knew the same things,  538 showed her lead had dropped to an uncomfortable level. And Roger Ailes  had fully joined the Trump team

Trump has demonstrated that he'll do anything to win. That "anything" has so far included obvious errors ,for example in handling his campaign staff , but his popularity hasn't been markedly damaged. Nor is there much likelihood that any  stupidity on his part is going to reduce it .  More likely one  may  increase it.

Hillary has continued to demonstrate as expected that she'll run a responsible campaign .And  that the  unfavorable opinions about her  have hardened. The best she can hope for is to try to get back to her Aug 1 popularity.

So Hillary with her shoes nailed to the mat and Trump unencumbered by any constraints.  Did we have grounds for our confidence a month ago? Maybe.

But add Ailes  to this mix. He has a record of successes going back to Nixon. But has never before been gifted with a candidate who will say or do anything. So far Trump  has employed baseless ,often easily refuted charges. Can't we expect that in the debates Ailes will equip   him with maybe  false but not easily refuted ones?

Don't plan to be away on Nov 8. And when debating the Bernie-ites here remember the object is not to show them where they are completely wrong. It's to get their vote, however reluctantly. They don't weight them, they count them.
