Political Stunner: McCain Chooses Georgian President Saakashvili as His Running Mate

--Washington, August 21  In a stunning development, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain has chosen Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili as his vice presidential running mate.

A beaming McCain said "Mikhail and I are a couple of daredevil guys who speak from the heart.  We're like two peas in a pod."

Standing next to McCain at yesterday's press conference, an elated Saakashvili said he was persuaded to join the ticket when McCain pledged to make Georgia the 51st US state.

"It's an unconventional route into NATO, to be sure.  But we're looking forward to the chance to flex our muscles and kick some Russian butt in a few months, knowing that our NATO allies will have our backs", Saakashvili added.

In response to criticism that his pledges to add Georgia as a US state and put a non-US citizen on the presidential ticket violate the US Constitution, McCain praised the Bush Administration.  "They established that following the Constitution is strictly optional.  And for that we are grateful."
