Showdown in America Bank Protests Start Today (a cheap cut-and-paste blog)

Is there one near you?  This is the week that may determine whether or not any meaningful financial reform is passed by Congress.

Peter Drier, TPM guest blogger posted yesterday about the combined groups who will join together to protest Wall Street and demand regulatory reform as a first step, then take on home foreclosures and payday loan usury. They will also focus on encouraging municipalities to hold Big Banks accountable, or transfer their deposits to local banks.

The organizing campaign is spearheaded three community organizing networks - PICO, National People's Action (NPA), and the southeast region of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) - along with SEIU and the AFL-CIO. Various other religious and community organizations will join at the various locations.

    Showdown in the Heartland

National People's Action, Grass Roots Organizing, Sunflower Community Action, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, and allies will hold a rally at Barney Allis Plaza in the Kansas City financial district at 1:00pm, followed by a march on Bank of America.

We will demand that they stop financing payday lending, stop foreclosing on our families, and start making good loans in our communities.

Showdown on Wells Fargo in SF

    WHEN: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 (12:00pm - 3:00pm)
WHERE: Meet at Justin Herman Plaza Embarcadero/Market St., San Francisco at 11:30am

WHAT: Join PICO National Network for a massive rally and march to the Wells Fargo Annual Shareholder Meeting to demand action on our proposals to create jobs; keep families in their homes; rebuild our neighborhoods; stop predatory lending and reclaim our democracy.

We will through SF Financial District to Julia Morgan Ballroom at 465 California Street at NOON -- featuring a Wells Fargo stage coach and mock "funeral procession" with the Brass Liberation Orchestra.

On April 28 the groups will march on the headquarters of Bank of America's shareholder meeting at the Welk Theater in Charlotte, NC

    .

Also on April 28 groups will protest in Chicago at Goldman Sachs' corporate offices with a list of demands.

On April29 the combined groups will march on Wall Street, spearheaded by National People's Action; Richard Trumka will attend.

And in May: (hope it's not all over before then):

The protest actions will culminate in three-day "Showdown on K Street" in Washington, D.C. from May 15 to 17. The DC mobilization will focus attention on the connections between the banking industry's political clout through its huge campaign contributions and lobbying war chest. It will include a series of protests at the offices of corporate lobby groups and members of Congress - Democrats and Republicans -- with close ties to the banking establishment.
