(Sigh) It's Over When It's Over

So the White House is saying they don't really know when exactly they or the military will stop enforcing Don't Ask Don't Tell...

since there are a few congressional reviews and what not to go through before it ends.

Way to get ahead of the curve - they've only been on this study since what, February, and couldn't foresee that if there were a vote, they might need to implement it?

Good going, lads, even when you do something positive, you have to do a negative to make up for it.

Yeah, I put this from Dan Choi on flavius' blog:

"..President Obama, you are not off the hook. The compromise bill passed today puts the moral imperative squarely on your desk. Sign an executive order instituting a full non-discrimination policy throughout the military. If you do not, if you drag your feet and politicize this with your theoretical calculations as you have these past two years, you will be guilty of abetting those who loudly proclaim homophobia from their platforms and pulpits. Provide them no shelter or safe haven. Institute justice now."

(Flavius disagreed with my take on it...)    Innocent

Watched on Digby the encounter of Dan Choi with Harry Reid - including Harry trying on Dan's West Point ring or whatever it was. Frankly, Reid was super cool during the event, especially when Dan turned out to be in the audience. Much as I bitch about Reid over the last years, he pulled out a stunner this year for all the right reasons (i.e., organized, appealed to his base)... But Reid trying on Dan's ring was especially funny - proxy marriage? just nervous? in the end he's promising to take care of DADT once and for all. Now, a lot of people have gotten caught on camera and had to hedge their bets. But Reid didn't. He might dismiss a failure - "did what I could". But you still get the idea he'll do more than that. And in the end, perhaps it was being pissed off at the GOP for their (well known) back stabbing ways - he laid up DADT repeal real nice and simple. And it carried forward. Not sure the White House knows what to do with it yet, but the've only had 2 years to think about it. Thanks Harry. Someone pointed out that even once upon a time even Liberace was low-key in Vegas.
