Taking a momentary break from politics... who are ya for in today's Super Bowl and what's your prediction?
Personally, I'm for the Steelers but if the Cardinals win it won't upset me. They are a good team too and Warner is an exceptional quarterback. I've always liked both teams for different reasons but hate to see Bidwell (the Cardinals owner) get rewarded with a Super Bowl victory after being as cheap and rotten an owner as he has been forever and after he really screwed St. Louis by moving out west.
I am not confident of my prediction but I'll say Steelers by a touchdown.
Comments
I am will be pulling for the Cards...if my team isn't in it I always pull for the underdog. I think that trait is part of the reason I am a liberal. And I also enjoy tilting at windmills btw, lol...but I digress.
Closer then the bookies see it. Steelers by 4...

If I were forced to make a choice, it'd be the Steelers, simply because Dan Rooney seems like a decent owner (not many of them left in the NFL these days).
Mostly, I'm hoping for an exciting game and some silly commercials.

You can't discount the effects of the 'terrible towels'...Steelers by 10

I of course rec you Oleeb. But I may not even watch the damn thing!!!

I'm taking the Cardinals plus six and a half. Warming up by watching the Australian Open which is tennis at such a high level that it is good to watch even though I know the outcome, and I don't consider tennis a good spectator sport. Love to play it, though.

I'm going with the Cards! I love an underdog and they are this year's Giants.
by dijamo (not verified) on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 9:05pm
Let's hope they're more like LAST year's Giants.

*sigh* Since I live in the Pittsburgh area, I have practical reasons for wanting the Steelers to win (people are much less bitchy the day after). Also, I am an unabashed fan of Dan Rooney, the Steelers owner - and was even before he publicly endorsed Obama in April. :-)
On the other hand, I am from the St. Louis area. And, though Bill Bidwill is the complete antithesis of Dan Rooney, I do still have an affinity for the Cardinals franchise. And, of course, Kurt Warner spent several seasons lighting up the (former) TWA Dome. I especially remember the celebration outside of Mike Shannon's in the moments after Mike Jones's game-saving tackle at the end of Super Bowl XXXIV.
So, I'm torn. I suppose I have to root for Pittsburgh. But I would love nothing more than to see Warner win a second ring, so I won't be upset either way. :-)

I stopped with the title. It aint hard at all to hate the Stealers, but then I'm a Cowboy fan.

Are the Leafs in this one?
YES, Little Stevie!

Steelers. With 2 minutes to play, I'm not sure whether I win my bet or not. Looking more like not right now. Crazy game.

Let me be the first to dust your shoulders off for your prognosticating skillz. :)

Your bet is good, piggy.
But not by much. :-)
One HELL of a game. Both teams put on a finish to remember.
by Boyd Reed (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 1:21am
Indeed! That may be the best Superbowl I've seen.

Hey hey - let's not be hasty! Giants Super Bowl XLII defeating the undefeated Pats!

Congrats to Hil99 and the Steeler Nation though for a close contender ;)
by dijamo (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 1:28am
Thank you, thank you...
I am 2 for 2 on my most recent predictions...Obama to become our 44th president and the Steelers winning this game by 4. Actually at the end of the game I was hoping I would be wrong...what a great story it would have been if the Cards won. But it was another great Super Bowl game and the Cards have nothing to hand their heads about. Congrats to the Steelers and their fans!!!

I don't even watch football and I thought it was a good game! My brother and wife are in town in a hotel so I hung around and watched for the company (and okay the ads - just to see).

I've seen every single one of them and this one is certainly near the top in terms of exciting endings.

Thanks...
Well I was much happier about my prediction of President Obama... :)
by Libertine (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 2:34am
Thanks oleeb...too bad I didn't have the foresight to put some money where my mouth was. ;-)
by Libertine (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 2:35am
I like it better than last year's - which I liked a lot.
You had two quarterbacks who were absolutely money in the end. I don't know that I've ever seen a SB *loss* that might put a player in the Hall of Fame, until tonight. Kurt Warner now has three of the top six SB passing totals of all time, and he put on an essentially perfect show in the fourth quarter against a brutal defense.
I hope Larry Fitzgerald doesn't hang his head. He's in Randy Moss territory now. He absolutely cannot be defended one-on-one.
As for Pittsburgh...Santonio Holmes made himself a lot of money tonight. :-) I think I'm happiest for Dan Rooney, though. He took a lot of heat for hiring Mike Tomlin over Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm. I doubt Rooney even thinks in these terms, but tonight completely validated that choice.

From time to time in any sport, a player plays at such a supernatural level that the sport is worth watching at that time just to see greatness live.
I'm thinking of Tiger Woods at the 2000 US Open, Serena Williams' title match at this year's Australian Open, Chris Carpenter pitching Game 3 in the 2006 World Series, or Steve Young in Super Bowl XXX (I think).
Tonight's game was so special because there were a TON of players who had career highlights. If Arizona had won, they had three fully legit MVP candidates - Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Darnell Dockett, who was the best defensive player on either team.

C'est la vie, eh?
by oleeb (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 3:27am
oleeb, wasn't it a great game? WOW!
I responded to your other post to me. Normally I wouldn't cross imply stuff like this, but your comment did really require a reply, so I"m letting you know it's there for you.
Thanks.

It was certianly up there in terms of great Super Bowls due to the last quarter and the incredible interception by Harrison that ended the 1st half. That was an extraordinary play.
I think Warner proved that he is a Hall of Famer tonight for sure. He's a good fellow despite his right wing Christian politics.
I was glad to see that Bidwell doesn't get the big prize. He is one of the worst owners of any professional team ever. What a bum!
by oleeb (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 3:32am
Yawn. NY is NOT the center of the world! (I say that because only a New Yorker would bring up the Giants that way.)
This game had real snap -- even if you didn't know much about football!
by YIKES! (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 3:33am
Take a team that was a wild card, didn't have home field advantage in a single game, and the sportscasters continued to vote against every round of the playoffs. New England favored 12 points over the Giants. Have them beat the undefeated New England Patriots with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and an awe-inspiring drive including "THE CATCH." I'd say that's a contender for best super bowl ever regardless of what team was playing.
Oh yeah, and NYC is the center of the universe.
by dijamo (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 3:54am
It certainly was! And I've replied back to you.

WOW! Again.

You're on a roll! Time to head for Vegas. But just remember, all that gaudy opulence was paid for by losers.
by markg8 (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 10:32am
Um, NFL defensive player of the year intercepts a pass in the end zone and runs it back over a hundred yards for a touchdown and Dockett was the best defensive player on the field?
by markg8 (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 10:36am
Warner may have rightwing politics but they did mention his charity of choice is Habitat for Humanity so he's not a total goof. Nice to see his wife grew her hair out. Looks much better than that spiked do she had earlier in the decade.
by markg8 (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 10:43am
Why are you conflating a season-long award with a single game's performance? Whether he was DPOY or not has NOTHING to do with him being the best defender on the field in a particular game.
Dockett - from a DT slot - wreaked havoc the whole game. Six tackles, two sacks, and personally ensured Pittsburgh had no running room. (Take away Willie Parker's one 15-yard run in the third - which went AWAY from Dockett - and he carried 18 times for 38 yards.)
Did you see him blow up play after play? Justin Hartwig had three false starts called on him trying to stop Dockett.
Yes, Harrison had the signature defensive play of the game. He also had a completely idiotic personal foul late in the game that helped Arizona come back. Frankly, Harrison should've been tossed out - he took *several* cheap shots at a player who was down and basically defenseless. I imagine he'll be writing a decent check - and hearing from Mike Tomlin.
by Boyd Reed (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 11:04am
Right you are about Habitat and his wife's appearance.
I think Kurt is heavily under the influence of a Megachurch preacher so he just follows the political line he's instructed to follow. He has always been a very generous and decent guy with his riches.
by oleeb (not verified) on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 12:41pm
Now that it's over, I am definitely predicting that the winner won.
