    What if...?

Historians have the truism, "history does not reveal its alternatives," drilled into them from day one.  But I'm on vacation and a secret reader of alternative histories besides. (Don't tell anyone.) Which goes by way of saying that recent news about Max Baucus led me to a little fantasizing.

Suppose that Ned Lamont had won, defeating Joe Lieberman and the Republican non-candidate whose name I can't remember (can anyone?? no fair looking him up).  Would Baucus and  other blue dog Democrats be as comfortable vacuuming up Health Lobby contributions and going against the majority of their party, not to mention the majority of the public?  Just wonderin' that's all...just wonderin.
