Those of you who live in the North America* will be treated to a total lunar eclipse tomorrow night (Monday night/Tuesday morning)! The whole thing unfolds over about 3.5 hours, starting at 1:30 a.m. Eastern time.
Damage from the Stuxnet virus has apparently set back the Iranian nuclear program by as much as two years, according to a German security expert talking to the Jerusalem Post. This makes the virus as effective as a military strike—but without loss of life or risk of full-blown war.
Metro anti-terrorism teams will immediately start random inspections of passengers’ bags and packages to try to protect the rail and bus system from attack, transit officials said Thursday. [...] If people refuse, they will be barred from entering the rail station or boarding a bus with the item, Taborn said. The inspections will be conducted “indefinitely,” he said.
Striking resemblances between BP's Gulf of Mexico disaster and a little-reported giant gas leak in Azerbaijan experienced by the UK firm 18 months beforehand have emerged from leaked US embassy cables.
Operation Payback has begun a new fax-based campaign against some of the companies who decided to distance themselves from WikiLeaks. As part of its new Leakflood mission, the Anonymous group of 'hacktivists' is encouraging its members to send a large number of faxes to Amazon, MasterCard, Moneybookers, PayPal, Visa and Tableau Software.
Out of the gate, let me just say it pains me to call this hacking. Might as well go out like a total /tard with it ... "Do you want to know how the 3771 haxors took down Visa?" ... barf. However. Damn script kiddies and MSM screwing up the brand aside, this is what they're calling hackers these days so ... you might be wondering what exactly the guys "hacking" Visa/MC/Sarah Palin/Various Swiss/Swedish institutions/etc. are actually doing...
I've been a big fan of The Young Turk's Cenk Uygur for a while now, and this confirms for me exactly why. I never agree with anyone all the time, but his world view is pretty close to mine on a lot of stuff. Ratigan and Greenwald tend to be more hit and miss. But this segment ... the three of 'em together ... pure awesome.
So, MSNBC decided to suspend Keith Olbermann. Why? Because he dared to participate in Democracy!
I've made no bones about the fact that I think systemically the product produced by MSNBC is the same as all the other cable outlets in selling outrage over information - anger over reason. And as one of their flagship personalities, I've mentioned the way Olberman presents himself as an example.
OK, file this one under a creepy coincidence (the vid itself, being creepy, the coincidence just being coincidental). I've been obsessing on the Nevada race somewhat of late, and got off on a tangent regarding who's been financing the Angle campaign in a discussion with another poster. By the common method of assessing "who benefits here?" he came to the conclusion, Ensign. Which at the time, didn't seem a *bad* thought.
I'm going to open with a big 'ole caveat that our resident prognosticating expert thinks I'm all wet here. But to me, it sure looks like Reid is increasing his lead in Nevada daily. The biggest point of disagreement is the GOP crossover vote - he finds the number from the latest CNN/Time poll to be overly optimistic ... while I find it to be understated.
So, I've been out of the loop for a few weeks (and heading back out again). Spent a bit of time wandering around catching up on my regular spots and came across this post by Sisyphus over at 43rd state blues highlighting some WH PR on Obama's plan for how to deal with Bush tax cuts. Am I the only one who hasn't seen it yet?
Five months after the confirmation of army Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander to be the head of the Pentagon’s new Cyber Command, it would appear that the first evidence of active cyber warfare has appeared. Ars Techica summarizes emerging consensus.

File this one under cool stuff that it would be nice if the US had developed. This month in Italy, a new type of Concentrating Solar Power facility was brought online. To me, this is one of the more exciting...

With all love showered on that attention whore of oily disaster, BP, some of her slippery compadres have been feeling a bit left out recently. Well, Chevron officials got together and came up with a plan to rectify the situation:...
From the moment Specter became a Democrat it was no secret that the establishment wanted Sestak to defer his own candidacy. Progressives were rather irate pretty much from the instant it became apparent this would be the case. There were...
