Chicago is among several US cities experiencing a big spike in shootings and homicides. The increased gun violence comes as cities reopen during a pandemic and mass anti-police brutality protests have led to law enforcement reforms and budget cuts. https://t.co/WV1kYi5NKq

This weekend, our San Francisco family was once again struck by the tragic loss of a child to gun violence. No parent — no family — should have to feel this pain. Last year, the House passed H.R. 8 to #EndGunViolence. The Senate must take swift action. https://t.co/5lTfM8QhZD

Atlanta (CNN)Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday declared a state of emergency and activated as many as 1,000 National Guard members.
Kemp, a Republican, said the executive order follows "weeks of dramatically increased violent crime and property destruction in the City of Atlanta."
The governor's statement says more than 30 Georgians were wounded by gunfire over the extended holiday weekend, including five people who died.
[.....]
"We've had over 75 shootings in the city over the past several weeks," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said when talking about the 8-year-old's death on Sunday. "You can't blame that on APD (Atlanta Police Department)."
[.....]
"Peaceful protests were hijacked by criminals with a dangerous, destructive agenda. Now, innocent Georgians are being targeted, shot, and left for dead," Kemp said in a statement. "This lawlessness must be stopped and order restored in our capital city."
The governor's statement says the National Guard will "provide support" at state buildings like the Capitol and the Governor's Mansion so state police can increase patrols.
According to CNN affiliate WSB, authorities said 60 to 100 people went to Georgia State Patrol headquarters early Sunday morning and some used bricks or fireworks to damage the building.
Guard troops will also be stationed there, the governor said.
Kemp calls in the national guard for a local police issue. If the guard goes into Atlanta, it will be Stop and Frisk on steroids. Everyone becomes a target or will feel the state is acting against them.
Infections up 80% since Memorial Day, at times 50,000 new cases a day - but only 33% increase in fatalities. Could someone be, ahem, burying bad news - deliberately classifying Covid deaths as something else? While it's likely we've got lessons learned in treating Covid, with rapidly overrun facilities it's more likely patients will die. But if say pneumoniae Is a plausible excuse... Or old age? "Natural" causes?
Or Is that cases Are getting younger or strain getting weaker?
Florida shows 1/4 death rate of AZ or other states with booming infections - how can that be? Youd think science, lessons learned and facilities And strain if virus would be roughly the same, with Florida worse off because of double the new infections. But no - fewer dead somehow. More kids in FL? Saltwater?
PS - Montana blowing up - 50 new infections a day, today 78. One of Anon's "herd immunity" states will hit 1500 infections in about 3-5 days.
Yeah Florida's lying stats is a big problem as it has a propaganda effect across the country and with younger people and De Santis knows it and that's why it's being done.
From what I read older people in FL know wassup and are just stuck in isolation.
There's all kinds of ways FL accomplishes the lying. Old people get it and the cause of death can easily be written down as something else.
Here's what I see: If the state actually were to advertise that they are not into helping old people live longer, the ranks of retirees would not be replenished with new ones who spend retirement dollars and keep FL economy going. So one has to lie about the dying.
All the local governments are not with his program, though. The Miami mayor for example, knows how many people are dying and/or surviviing with handicaps, what is happening in the hospitals, cares.
It hits me right now looking at this again on orphans in NYC, all the stats are a "lie" in one way or another, it's all in your priorities what you decide to count. What most people are measuring right now are the stats that epidemiologists use to control epidemics, but those are not measuring everything about the pandemic that is affecting society. They are just the numbers that epidemiologists have learned help them best. It's the "lying statistics" thing.
It still blows my mind how in just a span of two weeks in Chicago we had a 10-year-old, 7-year-old, 3-year-old, and one-year-old shot and killed. 8 kids in total shot over that time period. We're living at the center of two emergencies in the US. https://t.co/KFbW6ZKjrY

A man was fatally shot Monday morning near the Anacostia Metro station in Southeast Washington, continuing a surge of violence in the District that included the slayings of an 11-year-old boy and six others since July 1.
[....]
The recent spate of fatal shootings dominated the mayor’s briefing Monday on the coronavirus, as she expressed frustration over the violence and demands to bring it under control.
“People are hurting when they see a child senselessly killed in our city and they want answers,” Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) said, adding, “People want it just to stop.”
Referring to the killing of Davon, Bowser said, “I guarantee you when they find out what this is about, it’s going to be about nothing — it’s going to be about absolutely nothing.”
The mayor described Davon, a middle school student and star football player killed when gunfire erupted at the end of a violence-prevention cookout hosted by his mother — as a “bright, beautiful boy” who is dead because “somebody shot up his neighborhood.” She said his shooting is “not a game. It’s not a video. He’s not coming back. It’s real bullets. Real bullets kill children.”
She said when police arrived, the dying boy was in his mother’s arms.[....]
During the mayor’s briefing, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham provided some new details about some other recent killings [....]
Recent data on homicides show a mixed bag. 18 of 30 cities noted decreased violent crime during the pandemic.
Homicide numbers were mixed — deaths increased in nine cities, decreased in nine cities, and 12 reported no change. Slayings in Los Angeles dropped from 31 during that period in 2019 to 16 in 2020, but homicides in Nashville during that period rose from four to 14. Homicides in Baltimore rose from 20 in those weeks last year to 23 this year. In Washington, they went down, from 11 to 10. Overall, the total number of homicides in the 30 jurisdictions dropped from 224 to 216, which is a 3.5 percent decline.
