I didn't realize how low Seattle's police staffing had gotten. They're at 954 cops for 734,000 people, which is 1.3 per 1000 - half of San Francisco, less than a 3rd of NYC.

That's much higher than Mississippi's black murder rate, but Seattle's fine if you don't adjust for demographics! Who cares if black people are way more likely to be murdered in our ultra-rich city than in America's poorest state?
It happened in Brooklyn Center (Minneapolis) Minnesota. Those demographics would seem to suggest something other than the "deranged school shooter" mass shooting. pic.twitter.com/02we99iEX7

Our adversarial criminal justice system isn't perfect. It might not even be good. But it is our system. Defense and prosecution are not supposed to represent the same side. The system breaks down when defense attorneys are elected prosecutors. https://t.co/6ijL4C0Kvp
More teen killing started in 2018. Why? NYT posits guns, school, social media, Covid, death of caregivers. Then, in near the last paragraph, a passing mention of Raise the Age, linking it to 2017. But RTA took affect in 2018/2019. Why discount the obvious?https://t.co/E9rGDnVDcdpic.twitter.com/RSGHFRQN4j
"In the first year after RTA was enacted, 48% of 16-year-olds who were arrested once were arrested again. That’s up from 39% the previous year. For felonies, it rose from 26% to 35%; and for violent felonies, from 18% to 27%." Seems relevant. https://t.co/uCyQ4xBQFT
Is it only Raise the Age? No. Of course not. But at it's most basic goal, helping kids, raise the age failed . And nobody who advocated for it seems to be bothered by that enough to want to make it better. That's what I don't get.https://t.co/vKFc3Ootklhttps://t.co/J26LqsJtRK
The NYT article does actually mention race, much to my surprise. "All" is a pretty large percent. I would presume all the victims were Black or Hispanic as well. pic.twitter.com/4KoqWyXCF3
"45 children ranging from 13 to 17 were charged with murder last year, nearly double 2018." And 26 of 45 from the Bronx. By bad logic that means the system is anti-Bronx, since 58% of kids charged with murder are from the Bronx, which has 17% of NYC's pop.https://t.co/E9rGDnVDcdpic.twitter.com/oDPq4w3r5g
There was a major reform battle to "Raise the Age." It passes. It changes the legal system for 16 & 17 yr olds in NYC! Victory. And then the NYT writes a story about rising violence in that age group at that time and won't seriously consider that Raise the Age may have mattered?
I'm trying to think of an analogy. It's like raising the speed limit and decreasing traffic enforcement in 2018 and then writing an article in 2023 and being baffled why crashes increased in 2019. I mean maybe it wasn't the major change in law, but shouldn't we look there first?

“It’s urban warfare,” Darress said. “Psychologically, when people have all this armament, that changes who you are and that changes your response to calls.” ...But the environment evolved too, with more and more residents openly and legally carrying pistols and rifles.

In 2011, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded by telling dispatchers and patrol officers that simply seeing a person with a gun should not automatically prompt a police response.

“Obviously, the problem is that when the open-carrying citizen is on their way to commit a crime,” Burns said dryly, “we have limited our ability to respond quickly.”

(The story takes us through two more local mass shootings) which "contributed to an exodus from the city police department that year. The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that 52 officers left in 2015, with some citing the rising tide of violence in their resignation letters."
— Goth or Ostro-goth? (@EdwardEricsonJr) April 5, 2023
We then get into the prosecutors' decisions to recommend probation for felons caught with illegal guns. “Weapons violations are not severely prosecuted here,” Burns said. “Very often, if there’s no serious injury, it’s ‘no harm, no foul.’ ”

“If the legislature wants to make serious changes with gun crimes — they can raise the level for previous offenders and make mandatory prison for offenders committing a crime with a weapon,” District Attorney Michael J. Allen said in an emailed statement.

Which gets us into "red flag laws," which allow the cops to take guns away from violent lunatics, wife-beating Mr. Happys, etc. and which the local sheriff publicly vowed not to enforce.

In Houston many (wealthier) neighborhoods have something similar: a private-public partnership called the Constable. The Constable is an elected official (and there is one for each precinct) and then the neighborhood can hire deputies.
In New Haven, Yale PD is actually larger than NHPD (though many many people in Yale's police department are also in NHPD). Yale provides a lot of the civic services to downtown new haven

— Vaporwave Empire 2024 (@ancap_antifa) April 5, 2023
The University has had a large police force for decades. If I recall, it is the third largest police force in Illinois after the City of Chicago and the State Police.
Plus the University has long been a bastion of conservative thought so any allusions to “woke” are misplaced.
They vote one way, force it on poor and working class whites, then protect their own children from consequences. They vote in progressive policies - then live in gated ethno communities. This needs to end. Doesn't matter if conservative or liberal - both do same.
A few blocks south of Hyde Park are some of the most violent neighborhoods on Earth. It takes some stones - take a drive around dusk to get a sense of the brutal conditions too many innocent Chicagoans experience. Nothing less than domestic terrorism.
Can you blame the progressives for not wanting to send their kids to the government schools in Chicago even though the icky Republicans don't control the system?
Yes, Hyde Park liberals are huge hypocrites, voting 2:1 for Johnson. But they're also fools since their private services won't save them as Chicago sinks. @UChicago's ~100 cops couldn't keep 3 students from being murdered in 2021 (a 4th shot in 2022 lived). 0 died 1978-2006. 1/
How many top students & profs are dropping Chicago from their lists? One of my kids went there 10 years ago; today we wouldn’t let him (if he even wanted to). Chicago always lost eminent profs to California’s climate; how many will it lose to safer locations (is there a great 2/
Univ in a more dangerous location? Penn? Not Columbia)? Without the University, Hyde Park dies. And even if the Univ somehow stays strong, businesses & residents fleeing crime and terrible schools will set up the vicious cycle of declining tax revenues>declining services Matt 3/

This is exactly what I am constantly writing/thinking about: When we do not hold people accountable for smaller crimes, i.e., destroying property in the act of "protesting," we correspondingly create flex for larger crimes. https://t.co/9oQrzPnRAs h/t @PeterMoskos
I attended a Zoom yesterday with @DAMikeSchmidt, who explained programs Portland has in place to keep people out of jail, esp. first-time offenders. All good. This was not the case in Chicago, nor the case with Mohamed Adan, who murdered Rachael Abraham https://t.co/UZCptRZ2Ae
I had a ? for @DAMikeSchmidt I did not get to ask: with a record murder rate in PDX, and a dearth of PDs causing cases to be dismissed, how can his office keep violent criminals in jail while awaiting trial? Adan had pledged to kill Abraham, had 5 DV felonies, multiple arrests
.@DAMikeSchmidt's office did impose bail of $65,000. Judge scrapped that. Adan was freed. Repeat repeat repeat; 7 judges in all, all last summer. Finally a 20K bail, which meant $2000 security, paid by private bail fund. Sprung again, Adan murdered Abraham a week later.
Adan had made his intentions clear. City opted for an ankle monitor. He tore that off. Re-attacked Abraham. Rearrested. Released again. You will not be surprised to learn I've gotten serious pushback for suggesting we keep someone like Adan in jail. How is this more just?
The fact that the teen in Chicago will not be charged with murder does not make it not-murder, does not being the 17-year-old he killed back. What is does is tells people, it's cool, go ahead; we've developed the institutional muscle memory to look the other way.
BTW, Rachael Abraham leaves six young daughters. comes to mind after posting the below, that if you don't like the idea of robocops, but would prefer the human variety, then perhaps lay off of some of the ubiquitous cop bashing on social media
Maybe a little less filming of cops with cell phones going about what they were ordered to do, and posting it on social media so people can argue with you infinitum and pick over what you would do if you were a cop (which you would never do-become one-so in the end who gives a flying fuck what you think, you're not teaching them either)
and more filmiing of criminal behavior? and furnishing it to the cops and crimestoppers etc.? As in helping rather than armchair quarterbacking?
here's an example of one who doesn't like the "it takes a village to maintain security" ethos:
It will get enforced when he gets pulled over. What EVERYONE is mocking you for is that you think YOU are the one who must enforce it. Mind your own business and leave people alone.

Competent police officers have a broad range of choices and I can't imagine them choosing SF right now; maybe they know it'll take far longer to find police officers who are effective - IF they even let the police do their job.

Guy out on bail for shooting at 3 cops in 2021, arrested for killing two others this weekend (was celebrating Easter?)
NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Manhattan man who was out on bail after allegedly shooting at three cops in 2021 was arrested early Tuesday in Sunday’s execution-style killing of a man at a Harlem smoke shop—and in another fatal shooting just a day before that one.
Messiah Nantwi, 21, was busted on two charges of murder and a single charge of criminal possession of a weapon.
Police said he was nabbed in Harlem around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday....
continued at
Bronx DA's Office: The judge in Messiah Nantwi's 2021 police shooting case set a bail at $500,000, over prosecutors' objections. Bail later reduced to $300,000, with 10% posted.
Has been out on bail since mid-2021. Next court date scheduled for April 21. https://t.co/1WXkhoSulb
finally no bail BUT WAIT SOME IN GOVERNMENT STILL GOTTA PROTEST THAT IN SUPPORT OF NATWI, believe it or not!!! (Black and brown people must be free to shoot and kill other black and brown people in case they want to?)
Let us all take a moment to shed a tear for Messiah Nantwi, who was arraigned today on two counts of second-degree murder, with an open case for shooting at three police officers in 2021.
The poor persecuted vicim of systemic injustice is being held on Rikers Island. Oh tears!!! https://t.co/FtVJxSutM0
Messiah Nantwi, 21, remanded without bail at a Manhattan Criminal Court appearance on two counts of murder for gunning down two victims in a lethal 27-hour period. https://t.co/6hLI2kOaz3
During the gunfight two years ago, Nantwi pulled a gun and fired three times at the uniformed officers before they returned fire, officials said. The 2021 prosecution is still pending, according to court records.
At the hearing, the defense attorney argued that in the 2021 case (where he tried to shoot three cops) Nantwi made 20 subsequent court appearances and attended his court-mandated treatment program without issue.

The D.C. police force has shrunk to a half-century low, as officers leave faster than they can be replaced.
Despite some hiring in the past year, the MPD had just over 3,350 sworn officers at the end of March, a net loss of 450 over the past three years.https://t.co/gl0ZOJi12s
'Homicides in D.C. exceeded 200 in each of the past two years, a threshold the city had not crossed since 2003. As of Friday, killings were up 31 percent from this time in 2022.'
The size of the D.C. police force has shrunk to a half-century low as officers leave faster than they can be replaced, according to the agency’s chief, forcing the department to spend millions on overtime while it struggles to combat gun violence and carjackings.
Despite some hiring in the past year, the force had just over 3,350 sworn officers at the end of March, a net loss of about 450 over the past three years. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said he expected the size of the force could fall to about 3,130 by the end of fiscal year 2024.
Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) has said she wants the department to have4,000 officers by 2031, though Contee testified at a recent D.C. Council hearing that given the city’s current budget restrictions — along with a dearth of people applying for police jobs across the county — that goal is likely unattainable.
“We are no longer in a space where debating the maximum size of the police force is necessary or productive,” Contee told lawmakers at the March 31 council hearing. “Absent significant shifts in national employment levels, the environment for law enforcement, or the interest of younger generations in long-term government careers, MPD staffing may not recover for more than a decade.”
Police departments in the D.C. region and across the country are struggling to hire and retain officers, competing with each other to offer financial and other incentives in hopes of swelling their ranks. Experts say that fewer people want to work as police officers because of fatigue over crime and civil unrest, heightened scrutiny, low pay and a lack of interest in government service.
In D.C., discussions about the budget and the size of the police force are coinciding with federal lawmakers’ taking an interest in crime in the nation’s capital. Last month, Congress voted to block a controversial overhaul of the city’s criminal code, in part because it would have lowered the statutory maximum penalty for certain crimes, including carjacking. Republicans in Congress are now targeting a separate police reform bill passed by the D.C. Council, though President Biden has said he plans to veto any effort to block the measure from becoming law [....]

it's detracting from THE REAL PROBLEM - since 2020 Geo. Floyd protests an increasing number of people feared defunded and demoralized police will no longer be able to protect them and went out and acquired guns and feel they have to protect themselves.
Do you want rule of law or to go back to the 'wild west"? Sure some cops are bad. You'd rather trust your untrained unknown neighors instead? Really? What if your neighbor used to be a cop?. How would you know that? Really, the whole BLM theory is insane! The protests were also a temporary time of mass insanity, probably tied partly to the feeling of impotence of the pandemic. All based on one video!!! A totally irrational emotional reaction to one video as if it represented everything 'the man' ever did to make life unfair!!!
And now we are stuck because a gazillion more people have guns and are urged to use them to protect themselves, even though most of them have zero training and many more of them are irrational emotional 'bad apples' FAR MORE 'BAD APPLES' WITH GUNS THEN WHEN WE EVER HAD WITH POLICE! Can I repeat? Far more! Gee thanks Geo. Floyd protestors, what a wondrous USA you left us.

Oh, the large group of juveniles fighting includes a "male with gun." I wonder WWSWD? (what would social workers do? Protect LLBean, and the workers and the shoppers at MOA, or just give up on life as we knew it and let Amazon sell everything? Because kids will be kids. So arm the social workers too, just like the teachers? Everybody can be police!)
MALL OF AMERICA: Officers have deployed mace while attempting to clear a large group of juveniles from the north food court area of the mall. Transit officers are assisting, as well as Mall security. - It follows a fight that had earlier been broken up by security in the food…
Officers reported a male with a gun was taken into custody in front of LL Bean and the gun was recovered. - Another person was detained after a fight in another location.
MOA is broken. Can’t safely take my family there anymore without fears of this. Sad. When will they institute some actual laws and rules? How many times does this have to happen? Come on MN. We are better than this.
Many protested about the militarization of the police and ironically what grew from that is the militarization of daily civilization. It really wouldn't take that many more steps to become Haiti. Oh look, Leigh, Matt & Rachel won't go to the MOA anymore, they prefer not to get PTSD.

Recall that during the riots of 2020, Lightfoot ordered the bridges around downtown raised, they kind of just threw up their hands and gave up because they didn't have a crowd control tactic. 2 years later, the city/CPD still doesn't have anything?
If CPD had moved aggressively to just clear all the teens in the group last weekend, that would've been a bigger story than the violence from the group. The dynamic of being caught between doing too much or doing too little is making policing pretty hard in these contexts.
Besides the U.S becoming awash with tons more guns, here's some other things the wunnerful 2020 protests against police brought us. Pranksters not taking crime seriously and rooting for vigilantism in reponse

^ thread is evidence there are a lot of reasonable people out there, who are both liberals and conservatives but who don't relish fighting online with left and right extremists and their agitprop! And dislike political spin, but would rather discuss facts. WHAT'S MORE THEY PROLLY ALL VOTE! I don't think partisan spin helps win this type of voter, just the opposite, and if the two parties won't disavow their extremist leftties and righties, they are always going to have trouble winning nationally! I.E. nationally, it does no good for tried-and-true Democrats to bitch about Trump and MTG if they aren't going to bitch about BLM and DSA as well! It's not really 'going for the center', that's inaccurate these days, it's going for reasonable, grownup people. Partisanship sucks more than ever.
Few reasonable people believe the 1/6 crew is worse than CHAZ or lots of other things that happened in 2020. So stop pushing that! Really! The argument that "most Geo. Floyd protests were peaceful" implying most 1/6 trumpies were not is BULLSHIT! Most that attended the 1/6 Trump rally didn't go inside the Capitol but went home!!! If you use that argument you are only showing your partisan delusion.

http://dagblog.com/comment/325804#comment-325804
Maybe a little less filming of cops with cell phones going about what they were ordered to do, and posting it on social media so people can argue with you infinitum and pick over what you would do if you were a cop (which you would never do-become one-so in the end who gives a flying fuck what you think, you're not teaching them either)
and more filmiing of criminal behavior? and furnishing it to the cops and crimestoppers etc.? As in helping rather than armchair quarterbacking?

here's an example of one who doesn't like the "it takes a village to maintain security" ethos:
Yglesias is using an app that DC has enabled in order that citizens to help a maintain civilized ownership system of vehicles. "15 Boxes" would like to leave it to the traffic cops' "catch and catch-can system". And those who get away with it are lucky and those who pay for their cars to be registered are schmucks
by artappraiser on Tue, 04/11/2023 - 5:30pm
p.s. So would this "snitches suck" ethos regarding car licensing apply to gun licensing if we were able to do it? Cause I doubt that would work out well.

by artappraiser on Thu, 04/20/2023 - 8:00pm
To make 'stand your ground' shootings about 'racism' not only flies in the face of facts--Kaylin Gillis was White and her shooter was White --
it's detracting from THE REAL PROBLEM - since 2020 Geo.

Protect LLBean, and the workers and the shoppers at MOA, or just give up on life as we knew it and let Amazon sell everything? Because kids will be kids. So arm the social workers too, just like the teachers? Everybody can be police!)
Many protested about the militarization of the police and ironically what grew from that is the militarization of daily civilization. It really wouldn't take that many more steps to become Haiti. Oh look, Leigh, Matt & Rachel won't go to the MOA anymore, they prefer not to get PTSD.
