Robert Shiller:"Look for further housing price drop...Japan style economic plunge"

Robert Shiller (He's a Yale economist, he knows more than you do...) already famous for the Case-Shiller housing cost index and for the prescient book "Irrational Exuberance", has a message for the masters of the universe, (and the remaining non-masters who are hoping to get out of their unfortunate real estate positions...)

GOP in the HOR - Renewable Energy is Anti-Energy! Whaaaat????

As usual the TeaBag GOP is going out on a limb to protect Oil, Coal, and Nuclear energy producers. NREL - the National Renewable Energy Lab in Colorado is on the chopping block. I did an internship while in graduate school at the Washington State Energy Office in 1993. The program I worked for was the Energy Ideas Clearing House which was funded by grants through the Department of Energy. The funding source was through the DofE's Office of Science and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programs.

No Privacy. Just Privilege

The media can't resist talking about Congressman Weiner's penis. That's no surprise. The American entertainment industry exists to talk about penises and the things various penises like. And our news media is only a minor subsidiary of that entertainment empire.

Gingrich: The campaign begins anew Sunday--Thelma and Louise have signed on to drive the bus...

Many of us on the left used to grind our teeth at the frequency with which Newtie (hey, that's what his mama used to call him...) was invited to the sunday morning TV follies.  That is, until he self-destructed ("Anyone who quotes me is stating a falsehood..."  Huh?) after rashly speaking the truth about Ryan's kill-Medicare budget.

PARALLEL UNIVERSES

Sun-bong Choi is the Korean version of Susan Boyle.

He is the street urchin who made good.

You can read the article in Time.

He has an operatic voice to be sure.

And he was a bit of a set-up since he attended the Korean equivalent of Julliard whilst the audience is given to believe he is a homeless urchin wandering the urban streets in search of a mommy.

Obama's New Stimulus, (He's Still Not Getting It)

I was delighted to see this Bloomberg story about the White House pursuing additional stimulus after the failure of QE2 and the recent rise in unemployment.  But the method he's pursuing -- a temporary holiday for the employer portion of the payroll tax, which funds Social Security, is not going to fix things, even if the Republicans go along with it.

You Don't Deserve Lebron James

Ok, I’ve had about enough of this. Let me be succinct in my opinion here: Lebron James is the best basketball player on the planet. His combination of size, strength, talent and basketball IQ are completely off the charts. He plays defense like his hair is on fire. It is literally a joy to watch him play the game of basketball.

And you people just aren’t appreciating him at all.

For basketball fans, this postseason has been an embarrassment of riches. The Mavericks have become a brilliantly cohesive team around the great Dirk Nowitzki, and rolled to these NBA Finals after completely humiliating the defending champion Lakers. The Heat have had intense series against the likes of Boston and Chicago, and have emerged at the top of their game.

Men, power, reckless sex: Why? What are we missing?

I don't always read or agree with Maureen Dowd, but I do have her on my blogroll and now and then a title grabs me.  Yesterday she wrote "Your Tweetin' Heart".  Yes, I knew it was going to be about Anthony Weiner, but I read it anyway because sometimes her take on odd things like that is refreshingly different.

Legalize Drugs, Gambling and Prostitution

My social libertarian side comes out in my column for The Daily today.  I've always been a live and let live and let your freak flag fly type of person.  I think that people who want to live an atypical life should enjoy being chemically, sexually, physically and emotionally adventurous, so long as that's what they want to do.  If we only get one go at life, there's probably no point in returning your rental body without a few dings in it.

Capitalism FAIL

Greece is once again rioting over the austerity cuts and the unemployment situation here is worse than the depression of the 1930s.

Capitalism as a way to trade goods and services - which it is in it's most basic form - works pretty well in certain situations. Just look in any school cafeteria. You will see goods and services traded like crazy. And it anyone tries to cheat the system, they are generally dealt with  - usually on the play ground.

And in most societies and countries for a long time this was pretty much the case. Where it did break down, it was caused either by some unforeseen natural occurrence - crop failures and the like - or because a few people got greedy and these were eventually dealt with. Sometimes quite brutally.

Brazil's 2014 World Cup in jeopardy as work lags on stadiums, airports

As Brazil readies itself for the ultimate one-two punch of international sporting events - the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics - one thing has become increasingly clear - Brazil isn't even close to ready to host these two events.

AL QAEDA SAYS: BUY AMERICAN!

In a video released today Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn encourages terrorists to use American gun shows to arm themselves for potential Mumbai-style attacks.  Gadahn's video laid out a new tactic for Al Qaeda to continue their murderous terrorist agenda:

America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms. You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?
