American intelligence assesses that al-Qaeda is a significantly weakened force, yet developments in Pakistan indicate otherwise. The powerful Laskhar-e-Jhangvi, an anti-Shi'ite group, has now become a part of al-Qaeda's global operations, and they could be bolstered by anti-Pakistan Baloch insurgents.

Somali rebel leader backs merger with Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU: The leader of Somali rebel group Hizbul Islam said on Monday he backed the decision to join up with Al-Qaeda-linked insurgents Al-Shabaab in their bid to topple the Horn of Africa country’s besieged government.

Hasan Dahir Aweys, who had previously criticized Al-Shabaab for supporting Osama Bin Laden, welcomed publicly for the first time the merger of the two rivals.
“I am very happy with the unification of Somalia’s Islamists,” Aweys told reporters in Afgoi, 30 km south of the war-ravaged capital Mogadishu....
