Like man that's the most American story there is, too bad many progressives have decided to argue there are good and bad types of racial discrimination (they're all bad).
The majority ruling also emphasized the bizarre, now-common aspect that racial and ethnic groups who earn the most in the US are given preferences, while groups earning less (including whites and Middle Easterners) are "sent to the back of the line" for COVID relief). pic.twitter.com/d0x1JNGn87
This case is fascinating not only because it attempts to resolve one of the most inflammatory and divisive questions - whether it's remedial or bigoted to grant and deny benefits based on race - but also because of the parties and judges involved.https://t.co/fxEjj0ePCO
It's also kind of interesting that the lawsuit was brought by a husband and wife who each own 50% of a bar-and-grill. So their business is 50% minority owned. The threshold for whatever the law offers is 51% minority owned. https://t.co/vM65fHAy58
"As Judge Thapar put it:
[I]ndividuals who trace their ancestry to Pakistan and India qualify for special treatment. But those from Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq do not. Those from China, Japan, and Hong Kong all qualify. But those from Tunisia, Libya, and Morocco do not."
The labeling becomes absurd and morally unjustified. At some point we need to call the whole thing off.
Welcome all immigrants, I say. And special benefits for descendants of slaves, native Americans, and maybe pre-Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo "Spanish"? Sure. But after that? pic.twitter.com/3mu99FYNj9
The NFL says it will halt the use of “race-norming” — which assumed Black players started out with lower cognitive functioning — in a $1 billion settlement of brain injury claims. The practice had made it harder for Black players to qualify.https://t.co/OQpzSD88xM
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that tribal police officers can stop and search non-Indians on tribal lands for potential violations of state or federal law.
The justices unanimously reversed an appellate ruling in favor of a non-Native motorist who was charged with drug-related crimes after a tribal officer searched his pickup truck on a public road that crosses the Crow reservation in Montana.
The Supreme Court has previously held that tribal police have little authority over non-Indians, but Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the court that allowing a temporary stop and detention — so that state or federal authorities can be called in — enhances public safety.
“To deny a tribal police officer authority to search and detain for a reasonable time any person he or she believes may commit or has committed a crime would make it difficult for tribes to protect themselves against ongoing threats,” Breyer wrote [....]
Was wondering if anyone was going to sue over this crystal clear violation of civil rights law. (Figured perhaps the injury was too small for anyone to bother...) https://t.co/zFlcEbObNY
We waived fees & taxes for online businesses for decades, assuming that would somehow be good for everyone
(reality check - bricks 'n mortar shops not so much)
But where race-, zipcode- and income-based preferences - specifically for black businesses, sorry - would provide some reconciliation & needed buildup of black participation in the entrepreneurial economy, unh-unh.
It seems lots of paeans and promotion of women-owned this and black-owned that is great (let's not forget Women in STEM, vs.the still absent "Men in Childcare & Sewing Shops"), but something that would actually do something concrete rather than feel-good is still prohibited.
I'd much rather see a temporary biased-but-targeted program with specific goals, than a huge reparations mess that'd just be money sunk.
We see how removing the courts' oversight in southern voting rights let the states take a drastic turn for the worse.
Sometimes deregulation really sucks, & leaving things how they are quite limits potential progress.

^ suggests they also unanimously believe that having police forces improves public safety, go figure--AMAZING!
