> Attacks on older Asians stoke fear in Bay Area’s Chinatowns
Associated Press for San Jose Mercury News in San Francisco Bay Area, California
There are sadly many people on the left so mentally enfeebled by a simplistic “everything is white supremacy” mindset that they can’t comprehend anything outside that narrow worldview. Like, what if non-whites also had agency? https://t.co/wRkMg7UIBK
Alameda County DA Nancy O'Malley has announced the creation of a special response unit focused on crimes against Asians — particularly older Asians. It stems from two similar attacks in northern California as well as a spate of crime in Oakland's Chinatown https://t.co/NyuQoCvQD1
Telling poor Asian people that they are racist for wanting police protection from a wave of violence is wrong.
How sheltered do you have to be for ethnic studies jargon to be more real to you than the bodies of grandma and grandpa laid out on the street? https://t.co/l6iPnz8dz5
Some months ago when a poll came out showing that the vast majority of Asians aren’t concerned about hate crime, I rt’d it with some arch remarks about how I also have zero concern. I got piled on and deleted. I was wrong.
The company who made this post is based in Menlo Park. They’ve since issued a statement after LinkedIn user

A couple days after reporting on the Bay Area company requiring applicants be “non-Asian” someone sent me this job listing where qualifications include being a “non Asian national”
Just as I finished shooting my story with Oakland Police Chief Armstrong in Chinatown— the owner of Quickly on E 12th sent me this video of a woman getting robbed outside the store.
Today I spent some time walking through Oakland’s Chinatown with @oaklandpoliceca’s new chief LeRonne Armstrong who visited w/merchants & community members.
It was nice to see many people stop him to express gratitude for catching the suspect who shoved a 91-year old (1/2) pic.twitter.com/EA5Hv9XwjF
to the ground & after dozens of reported incidents of violence toward the Asian American community here.
This man owns a flower shop & was robbed in broad daylight but says new patrols & safety measures have brought some customers back. (2/2) pic.twitter.com/YbFAoCazAc
: Another case of being followed to or from the bank.

Just spoke to the man in the blue shirt who saw his friend’s car get broken into around noon yesterday at the Vietnam House restaurant parking lot.
assaulted and robbed of his bank deposit bag in San Leandro. @AlamedaPD tell me they have significant leads on the suspect who may be linked to other incidents in Oakland and San Leandro.
The victim doesn’t want to be identified told me he believes thieves are...
: Not again!

There are two wildly divergent political narratives about why there’s a spike in hate crimes against Asian-Americans in the Bay Area, no source I particularly trust to say which one is right, and also no hard data as to what the magnitude of the spike is.
“Of the 832 incidents reported in California, many included anti-Asian slurs and references to China and the coronavirus. One assailant yelled about ”bringing that Chinese virus over here“ during an attack”
Okay, I need to get this off my chest because it's been bothering me for a few months now.
American media has never backed up this claim that the words and actions by the previous admin directly cause the "rising tide of hate crimes" against Asian Americans. https://t.co/VkImZuJ2lO
Melissa Chen, who has a habit of looking at things from outside the bubble of the U.S. border (for example, she's managing director of Ideas Beyond Borders) has some questions related to topic:
Yes, they are unacceptable.
But riddle me this. Why, if Trump’s rhetoric or hawkish China foreign policy is the reason for the hate crimes, is this happening in progressive cities? And under Biden’s admin? https://t.co/qEGpCd1BM9
There’s a “March Against White Nationalism” today in NYC re recent violence against Asians, and this is the social image promoting it. Uhh is there a shred of evidence that 84 year old Vicha Ratanapakdee was killed by “white nationalism”? https://t.co/rsFW2qZQwxpic.twitter.com/XE3VMv0Uy1

The reason for the march is to create a sense of solidarity between Asian and Black communities
The goal is to send a message to decrease the attacks.
