Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Monday decried the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as racist, saying Jerusalem treats Palestinians "extremely unfairly."Sanders, speaking at a CNN town hall, called the prime minister's coalition a "right-wing, dare I say racist, government.
I've been seeing a lot of stuff, not just from the left, that implies AIPAC is no longer a major "influencer". Except to the clueless old timers. After all, you've got a whole new paradigm over there, with plenty of new friends of Israel that happen to be Sunni. And the Shia state the big enemy. And Russia....and Syria mess....Palestinians such a little group in the scheme of things, it's more like nobody cares about them at all anymore.
.@daveweigel: Tuesday Sanders, Buttigieg, & Warren all “endorsed a position that was nowhere in Democratic politics just 6 months ago — making military aid to Israel conditional on the country no longer annexing territory in Gaza and the West Bank.” https://t.co/ul4lZzPdDE
NEW: I asked @JoeBiden if he would be open to leveraging US aid to Israel if they continue with settlement expansion, as some other Dems have suggested. BIDEN said the idea is “absolutely outrageous” and it would be a “gigantic mistake” to condition aid to Israel.
(JTA) — Eight years ago Aaliyah Cuthrell knew little about the Jewish community, beyond what she had seen on a visit to her local Jewish community center to use the pool.
Things look different now for the 24-year-old. As a high school junior, she joined a prestigious two-year program for African-American teens in Baltimore. The program, founded by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., seeks to strengthen ties between the African-American and Jewish communities in his Baltimore district. As part of her fellowship in 2011-2013, Cuthrell met with Jewish teens, attended seminars on topics such as anti-Semitism and the Holocaust and spent close to a month living in a youth village in Israel’s north [....]
She is one of more than 200 graduates of the Elijah Cummings Youth Leadership Program in Israel. The fellowship, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, was founded by the African-American lawmaker to bridge gaps between the Jewish and black communities in his Baltimore district. Every year about a dozen teens participate in the program [....]

[....] AIPAC’s African American Outreach activists are leaders in their communities, comprising important religious, political, business and civic leaders in congressional districts with a large number of African American constituents. Pastors, state and local elected officials, leaders from major organizations, successful entrepreneurs and other community leaders have traveled to Israel with AIPAC’s charitable affiliate, the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF), and have become important voices in the growing African American pro-Israel community. An increasing number are building meaningful pro-Israel relationships with their members of Congress, helping educate current and future influential policymakers on the value of the U.S.–Israel relationship.
In addition to engaging their members of Congress, African American Outreach activists host meetings and share their support for Israel in their communities. These community leaders participate in AIPAC’s annual Policy Conference and help identify other African American leaders who have the potential to become pro-Israel political activists through AIPAC.
AIPAC currently focuses its African American Outreach in the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast Regions [....]
and reminded me of the new Black-Jewish caucus in Congress. Here in June, the pro-Palestinian site Electronic Intifada, in its "Lobby Watch" section, addresses that which some enquiring minds might want to know:
Five members of the US House of Representatives announced earlier this week the formation of a bipartisan Congressional Black-Jewish Caucus at the annual global forum of the American Jewish Committee.
The initial members of the caucus are Republicans Lee Zeldin of New York and Will Hurd of Texas, and Democrats Brenda Lawrence of Michigan, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida and Georgia’s John Lewis [....]
This week at the J Street Conference, Bernie Sanders said he’d tell the Israeli government that, “if you want military aid you’re going to have to fundamentally change your relationship to the people of Gaza.” Pete Buttigieg promised to ensure that American “funding is going to things that are compatible with U.S. objectives and U.S. law” rather than “promoting this settlement construction.” And Elizabeth Warren, in a videotaped message, said that America must find “ways to apply pressure and create consequences for problematic behavior.”
Using American aid as a lever to change Israeli policy has become a mainstream Democratic position almost overnight. To understand how dramatic that is, it’s worth revisiting recent history.
In 2016, Barack Obama agreed to give Israel $38 billion in military aid over 10 years — a significant increase over the previous 10-year-deal, which totaled $30 billion — without asking Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to change Israeli policy towards the Palestinians in any way. He did so even though Netanyahu had publicly rejected Obama’s call for a Palestinian state near the 1967 lines, blasted Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran before a joint session of Congress and funded a massive expansion of settlement growth.
The Democratic nominee to replace Obama that year, Hillary Clinton, suggested that Obama had nonetheless not been conciliatory enough to Netanyahu. In her 2014 book [.....]

Sanders is able to lead the attack. Netanyahu siding with the Republicans eased the path. Israel is behaving like an apartheid state.

Thanking the heavens that J-Street and Bernie are there to talk with a little more nuance about this issue than you do.
