Breaking: @PentagonPresSec says “At President Biden's direction, U.S. military forces earlier this evening conducted defensive precision airstrikes against facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraq-Syria border region” pic.twitter.com/jbn3uXgWr0
These new strikes are sure to heat up the AUMF fight currently brewing on the Hill.
A reminder how of Democratic lawmakers reacted the last time Biden authorized airstrikes in the region against Iran-backed groups without congressional approval —https://t.co/rEZke8FKOlhttps://t.co/K9F8WibHi1

One of Biden’s personal clichés that proves true for him again and again: “No one ever doubts that I mean what I say. The problem is I sometimes say all that I mean.”
JUST IN: US forces in Syria came under attack by multiple rockets, with no injuries sustained.

If these people did attack Americans I can't get too indignant about the retaliation. We may have no right to be in Syria, but neither does Iran, and they're doing more harm to Syrians. But I would like to see an end to America's wars.
"The U.S. military hasn’t suffered a fatality in Afghanistan since February 2020. So the tangible costs of staying in the country...would have been relatively low. The risks of leaving, on humanitarian as well as strategic grounds, are relatively high."https://t.co/zWveYQVf2J
In my latest for @AlMonitor, I read into the election of Ebrahim Raisi and how it contributes to the gradual transition in Iran from Khomeinism to Khameneism. @nargesbajoghli & @s_m_marandi provided some perspective to the piece. https://t.co/55ETN4kjon
President Biden’s weekend airstrikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria are rankling Democrats frustrated by his decision to sidestep Congress https://t.co/8xUkM0TN2J
President Biden cites his Article II authority as justification for ordering airstrikes on facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups in the Iraq-Syria border region. "Even those up on the Hill who are reluctant to acknowledge that have acknowledged that's the case," he says.

Iraq no like!
as I suspected it's partly to send the new regime a message about stepping over any line drawn

on second thought, maybe Iraq is just grateful to be able to say it's against international law so it looks like they don't approve of it....

Kabuki's important. Better to act out a nuclear war than engage in one, as 1 example.
