The Uighurs are under duress but the other major Muslim ethnicity in China, the Hui, are suffering a slow, quiet demise.
I revisited the Hui for first time in 2 years and saw a purge of ideas, symbols, culture, products — anything deemed not “Chinese.”https://t.co/unO13mVFjc
The NYTimes today, by Steven Lee Myers from YINCHUAN:
A secret Communist Party directive, titled “Reinforcing and Improving Islam Work in the New Situation,” warns against the “Arabization” of Islamic places, fashions and rituals in China https://t.co/wtNzykZZiF
Myers' article has photographic examples of what they are doing with mosques to try to "Sinicize" them:

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, has called for the “Sinicization of Islam.”

vase on the right, possibly to cover up Arabic script.

I witnessed some of this firsthand a long time ago - it was alarming even then. I can only imagine with the "advances" of Internet 2.0 and related technology (and an even more repressive/self-assured Chinese government feeling its oats).
